GOING DOWN THE OTELEY ROAD MEETS PROUD SALOPIANS – PART 2

We at Going Down The Oteley Road spoke to Andy and Iain from the LGBTQ+ Shrewsbury Town supporters group, Proud Salopians. In part two this brilliant two part interview we find out about their love of Shrewsbury Town.

How long have you supported Shrewsbury Town?

(IAIN) Since I started getting into football, which was quite late… I was about 11. I had a season ticket when I was 18 and stood on the Wakeman end.

(ANDY) Since 2005, when my friend and housemate at the time talked me into going along to Gay Meadow for something to do!

What was the first game you went to?

(ANDY) November 2005 was my first home game. Town vs Chester City (we won 3-1, scoring in the opening minute and being 2-0 up within ten mins!). My first away game was vs Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground in the same season (we won 2-1).

(IAIN) I was due to be a ballboy at an evening match (i forget which now), I think in the 93/94 season. It was pelting it down with rain and so the club put us in the stands instead of us getting soaked. I was called back to do it again just after xmas when I was stationed to the right of the goal at the Wakeman end 🙂 Was quite the experience!

Who is your favourite Town player of all time?

(ANDY) My answer will perhaps be easier to make than Iain’s, as I’ve only got 12 years to pick from! Certainly the first player who really caught the eye for me was Dave Edwards playing in that first season of my support. I did the unusual thing (for me) of having a shirt printed with his name and number on – and he promptly left! (never done that again since!), but his effort and passion for the club and the game is just fantastic so I was thrilled when he signed back for us in January. Fingers crossed he has some better luck with injuries and can stay fit and play a part on the pitch next season. More recently I was a big fan of Greg Docherty last year and Jon Nolan the season prior – I guess I’m fond of central midfielders with an engine!

(IAIN) This is so tough! I’d say for sheer entertainment value it was Luke Rodgers. He and Jemmo together were some force and his finishing was clinical. Back in the Conference days, I was the founder of the Dave Ridler Appreciation Society (DRAS), which then formed BHAS (Ben Herd Appreciation Society) when Gary Peters was in charge. More recently, Ben Godfrey, who I could not believe we managed to get on loan… just look where the boy is now!

Who is your favourite Salop manager of all time?

(ANDY) This won’t perhaps be a popular choice, but as he was ‘my first Town manager’ it has to be Gary Peters. That team between 05 and 07 in the last seasons at the owd Meadow wasn’t anywhere as technically competent as some we’ve had since, but my word GP had them well-drilled and working as a well knit team!

(IAIN) It’s got to be Graham Turner, I mean, who else! I met him once at a charity match down the old meadow and he was such a lovely man. Shout out to Gary Peters too, though – I’ll never, ever, ever forget that night at MK Dons, as long as I live.

What has been your favourite moment as a Shrewsbury Town fan?

(ANDY) The MK Dons Play Off Semi Final Second Leg at the National Hockey Stadium, without a doubt. The atmosphere at half time taking over from the poor singer making a hash of ‘Hey Jude’, us belting it out constantly through the second half, the shaky temporary stand at the away end, Cookey’s goals… Just amazing. Truly one of those “I was there” nights!

(IAIN) I jumped the gun a bit. MK Dons away, Play Off Semi final. Total madness!

What is your favourite Salop kit?

(IAIN) Scrambled Egg. And 99-01 stripes. Iconic.

(ANDY) Home? Probably the famous ‘scrambled egg’ shirt of 92/93. Away? Has to be the MG Sportswear shirt of the last seasons at the Gay Meadow. Not terrific quality but there’s something stirring and almost iconic about red and black stripes for me!

Where do you think we will finish this season?

(ANDY) I’m forever hopeful, so I’d like to think a top half of the table finish is possible (maybe even a push for play offs) but I think it’s more important that we identify and develop a style of football and identity consistently. Personally, I’d like to see us play some nice passing football and not be afraid to attack teams rather than sit and defend and soak up pressure so much.

(IAIN) I’d take mid-table off your hands right now. Nice, calm season with no threat of going down, and some fun along the way. I’d like to see us attack, score goals, and just play some neat stuff. Not asking for much!

Why do you love supporting Shrewsbury Town?

(IAIN) It’s never dull, is it… Seasons like the one under Paul Hurst, I guess, and the promotions under Mellon and Turner. There are always ups and downs in football, but when you get those successes it makes it all the more bearable!

(ANDY) Honestly? I don’t know. I don’t think a lot of people know why! Personally I was bitten by the bug standing on the Wakeman Terrace, watching footballers who fought and played for the shirt, in an old and decrepit arena but with those surroundings who couldn’t fall in love with it! But in the years that have followed we’ve moved away from all of that, and even now (and in the intervening years, on terraces like at Saltergate losing 4-1 [that McIntyre goal though!!] in the driving rain, snow and hail) I still love the club with every fibre of my being. So I don’t really know what it is that keeps me coming back (it certainly isn’t success!) but I certainly wouldn’t change it for the world!

GOING DOWN THE OTELEY ROAD MEETS PROUD SALOPIANS – PART 1

We at Going Down The Oteley Road spoke to Andy and Iain from the LGBTQ+ Shrewsbury Town supporters group, Proud Salopians. In part one of this brilliant two part interview we find out more about the group.

What is the Proud Salopians group all about?

(ANDY) Proud Salopians is like any other supporter’s group, though as the name and badge may suggest, our focus is towards Town fans who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning or other (LGBTQ+) and their allies. In our eyes, it doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from or what your background is. As long as you support Salop, we’d love to have you on board! Whilst primarily we’re a social networking group, we do also want to help promote Shrewsbury Town Football Club and the Montgomery Waters Meadow as a place where anyone can feel welcome and as part of the national movement ‘Pride in Football’ we’d love to work closely with the Supporter’s Parliament, SLOs and the Club Officials to improve what is already a positive matchday experience and welcome those who perhaps haven’t previously had the confidence to attend and support the team.

(IAIN) Inclusivity, diversity and ultimately hoping to encourage anyone at all, no matter what their personal lives, to openly enjoy following the Town. Ultimately cheering Town on to a successful future, as part of one diverse fanbase.

When did the group start?

(ANDY) The idea of a supporters group was hatched in February of this year. I’m not sure why then, what prompted it, whether I saw something somewhere or it was perhaps an unconscious thought. The idea was floated online, raised to the last Supporter’s Parliament meeting in May and following an initial meeting with Brian (the club’s Chief Exec), and Jamie (of STFC in the Community) we’re working behind the scenes to arrange an Official Launch Event within the opening weeks of the upcoming season. Off the back of the online post alone we’ve had expressions of interest from a number of supporters, which is fantastic!

(IAIN) It hasn’t officially launched yet, although talks have been going on behind the scenes for several months now. We have a few people ‘signed up’ although it doesn’t really work in that way. Keep your eyes peeled for info on an official launch in the coming months.

What is the aim of Proud Salopians?

(IAIN) Football is for everyone, and we want to make STFC a place that fans from all walks of life can feel welcome and not marginalised or uncomfortable. For younger fans, it’s important that they can see role models and a place for them to feel included and safe, if they are struggling with who they are aligning with what the world ‘thinks’ they should be.

(ANDY) Our main aim is to provide a positive atmosphere in and around the Montgomery Waters Meadow and at STFC matches both home and away, for fans from all backgrounds and walks of life. We will aim to get more people supporting and involved with the football club, as well as support the club in the ongoing work they do to challenge all types of discrimination in and around football. As Iain says, football should be for everyone and it’s vitally important that a safe and welcoming atmosphere is nurtured and developed for current and future generations of fans.

What would you like the legacy of Proud Salopians to be in years to come?

(IAIN) For me personally, if I can indirectly help to encourage even 1 more fan to matches, that’s a success. Someone else can share the joy (or mostly pain) of following Salop who may never have felt they would belong previously. Wider than that, I think we both just want to make sure that as one big team of supporters, our fanbase is tolerant, open, educated, welcoming, supportive to the point that all of this just blends into the background and becomes ‘normal’ (I hate that word!). Maybe, longer term, we may have an LGBT player (statistically speaking, we will have had more than one in our history already) who feels that this club is the most supportive place for them to feel able to be open about who they are.

(ANDY) I think Iain nails this perfectly. It doesn’t matter if there are two, twenty, or hundreds of people involved in Proud Salopians – if in forming the group we help to encourage and support even the odd fan to attend matches who wouldn’t perhaps have attended previously or hadn’t considered supporting a football team a viable option, that will be a huge success for us. Whilst we will have some identifiers (we currently have a (lovely) flag courtesy of the work of the Football Supporter’s Federation ‘Fans for Diversity’ campaign for example), we don’t – and don’t want to – stand out from the rest of the crowd. This isn’t about being a splinter group or about excluding anyone, indeed we welcome and encourage allies to be involved too and recognise the work they do as being hugely valuable.

How can people become a part of the group?

(ANDY) If you want to be a part of Proud Salopians, you can be! There is no entry requirement, no membership fee, no process involved at all in being involved with the group.

Our main method of contact currently is via social media (you can find us on Twitter @salopianpride and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/salopianpride/) but we also have a mailing list available if you’d just like to keep in the loop with developments and future events we’re working on (sign up here: https://mailchi.mp/5ec38c535a7f/proudsalopians). Stickers, badges and more may be in the works too, if there’s sufficient interest for them!

(IAIN) We genuinely want anyone at all to identify as part of Proud Salopians. There is no entry tariff or process, we would just ask that you’re a town fan who feels as passionately as we do that Montgomery Waters Meadow is a place that anyone can come to without feeling they shouldn’t be there. We aren’t asking anyone to ‘identify’ themselves or ‘label’ themselves – allies are equally as welcome, and encouraged 🙂 We have a Twitter account and will hope to have Facebook, maybe Instagram and a newsletter (amongst other things). Not to mention the rather snazzy stickers and maybe even badges…

How much do you think the diversity in football fan culture has changed?

(IAIN) I think it’s always evolving, and it’s certainly moved forward from when I first started watching Town. We can’t rest on that, though, and it’s important that we all continue to work together to be sure that the hard work that has gone before is carried on. In some ways, I think LGBTQ+ is still the biggest taboo in football, in large part due to the fact there are no openly LGBT players in the football league… I’m certain this knocks on to fans, particularly kids, who already know they aren’t the same as their mates. That’s one of the most tough parts.

(ANDY) I think when you think back to the 80s and the 90s when I was growing up, with the attitudes in society generally as well as in football as they were (off the cuff I think immediately of Brian Clough’s comment to Justin Fashanu “why do you keep going to that bloody poof’s club?”) we’ve come a really long way in the last couple of decades especially. The very fact we’re able to openly discuss LGBT supporters says an awful lot – but we’ve sadly still got a long way to go.

The recent news story about the ‘Gay Footballer’ who was self-proclaimed to be a professional player in the English leagues highlights just how much work there is still to do. (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-49093329 for the details) but essentially the account had confirmed they would announce their identity on 24 July, only to instead tweet “I thought I was stronger. I was wrong” before deleting the account. Whether it was genuine or a hoax/fake account is open for some debate, but there was certainly an element of ‘media frenzy’ and rather unhelpful speculation that took place around the account prior to it being taken down. I’d like to hope that through the work of Proud Salopians and the growing number of similar fan groups – alongside Pride in Football and the Fans for Diversity campaign nationally – we can collectively continue to challenge prejudice and discriminatory behaviour and improve football fan culture for all.

Huge thanks to both Andy and Iain for taking the time out to speak to us. Be sure to follow Proud Salopians on social media, on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/salopianpride , https://mailchi.mp/5ec38c535a7f/proudsalopians to join the mailing list and on Twitter at @salopianpride

FAN OF THE WEEK #3 – ED MORRIS

This weeks fan of the week is Ed Morris.

Where are you from?

I’m currently living between Cardiff and Leeds. But I’m originally from Shrewsbury, moved to West Wales when I was 4 months old.

What block are you in at home games?

Block 19.

How long have you supported Shrewsbury?

30 years now, I went to my first time game when I was 12. My uncle took me to my first home game and I was hooked as a true Shrew forever from the first kick of the ball that day.

What was the first game you went to?

It was the the 90/91 season, a home derby game against Chester. We won 1-0, the atmosphere hooked me from the first minute!

Who is your favourite Town player of all time?

My all time favorite player for me has to be Grant Holt. He proved he could score at any level by reaching the Premier League, I just wish we could have kept hold of him for longer. He scored some massive goals for us and he was so exciting to watch.

Who is your favourite Salop manager of all time?

Mickey Mellon, I know he didn’t have the best of endings with the Town, but he also bought us some great memories and the one thing I really did love about him was his fan interaction. Me and my cousin met him and had a beer with him once, he was brilliant with us.

Which do you prefer Gay Meadow or Montgomery Waters Meadow?

The Gay Meadow for me, the new stadium is very nice and everything and compared to some other lower league clubs we are lucky. But it just lacks the atmosphere of the one and only Gay Meadow.

What has been your favourite away game?

A game in the FA Cup last season against Stoke, on a wet and windy midweek night. 71 minutes gone, Shrewsbury were 2-0 down and then wen showed why no one should ever write off the mighty Shrews. I still pinch myself now and again that it actually happened.

What has been your favourite moment as a Shrewsbury Town fan?

There’s been quite a few favorites over the years but if I had to choose one it would have to be Everton at home in the FA cup in 2003. When Jemson scored the winner I jumped on my cousin and nearly broke his specs!

What is your favourite Salop kit?

My favourite kit is the Prostar kit from 2008, I also prefer the full lions head on the badge. My favorite away kit is the Argentinian style one, I would love to see that kit back.

Where do you think we will finish this season?

I was actually asked this by the Shropshire Star when dressed up as Del Boy at the last away game against Coventry last season. I feel we have to give Rickets a chance at a full pre season and a full summer transfer window. I have been pretty impressed with the signings he’s made so far but do feel we need another target man like we had in Grant Holt. If we can I feel we can definitely push for the top 6 and with a bit of luck the top 2. He who dares…

Why do you love supporting Shrewsbury Town?

I love the passion of the fans and the family feeling we have at the club. I’ve met some great fellow fans and people I consider good friends, especially last season. I met my good mate and football brother Paul Davies aka Podge ,think the world of him. It’s always been a dream of mine to have a Town season ticket, to go to every game and I’m hoping the season after next will be that time. Until then I’m targeting 20 games this season and to watch my beloved Shrewsbury town win promotion!

Massive thanks to Ed for answering our questions and for being this weeks fan of the week. If you fancy becoming a fan of the week just drop us a message on either our Facebook page https://m.facebook.com/GoingDownTheOteleyRoad/ or on Twitter @GDTORsalop

THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS…

We take a look back at what happened over the past seven days in the wonderful world of Shrewsbury Town.

MONDAY – The academy team made their way up north to Scotland as they prepare to take on St Mirren and Hearts.

TUESDAY – First Team coach Eric Ramsey left Salop to become assistant coach for Chelsea under 23’s. Town travelled to Cheltenham and came away with a 2-2 draw thanks to goals from Whalley and Eisa.

WEDNESDAY – It was announced that Montgomery Waters Meadow will hold an England Under 20’s game against the Netherlands on 5th September.

THURSDAY – Sam Ricketts has an interview with the Shropshire Star and said that he wants to see more consistency from Abo Eisa after a good performance against Cheltenham.

FRIDAY – Ricketts spoke to the Shropshire Star again stating that there are still places up for grabs in the team.

SATURDAY – Joe Parkinson joins as First Team development coach. Salop welcomed Dundee United to Shropshire for their last preseason game, Town put in a good performance against the Scottish Championship team and got a 2-1 win. Both goals came from Okenabirhie, one from the spot and a header for his second of the game.

SUNDAY – Fey reflects on yesterday’s game and says he’s looking forward to next week after a hard preseason.

HOW WAS THR GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked Bizzy for his thoughts on our final pre-season friendly against Dundee United.

Due to slurping from 10am, I’m writing this with a slightly jolloped view due to drinking with the Dundee lads .. I thought it was a cracking game for a pre season friendly .. the 3-5-2 is definitely here to stay and thought all three centre halfs were very good yesterday .. Giles again stood out hes a real gem and we’ve got to enjoy having him for a few months because he will play in the top flight in the future .. sorry about my love in with Dave Edwards but great to see him play 90 minutes i think he will be a cracker if he stays fit, not a huge fan of Vincelot but he impressed me yesterday too, does all the tough work in the middle, very hardworking .. great to see Fejiri on the scoresheet too as we all know he can finish .. would love to see Whalley start but if Fey bangs them in he deserves his place .. the competition for places in our squad is brilliant .. we will have a very strong bench this season … Cant wait for Pompey now im feeling very positive .. whatever happens this season i will love this club till i die ..
