WHO ARE YA? OXFORD UNITED

Here at “Going Down The Oteley Road” we will be speaking to fans of our opposition throughout the season. Ahead of our League One game at home against Oxford United, we had a chat with a U’s fan.

What’s your name?

Paul Smith.

Where are you from?

Didcot.

How long have you supported Oxford United?

Not long my 2nd season as a full supporter, I blame my son.

Who is your favourite Oxford United player?

Marcus Browne, I was chuffed when he came back on loan. Love his work rate. Plus he’s ex Hammers (my childhood team)

Who is your favourite ever Oxford United manager?

Jimmy Smith, because of what he did for the club. But I’ve only ever know KR and he’s definitely a manager with passion and drive.

Who should we watch out for from the current Oxford team?

Eastwood, he’s really pulled out some massive saves. Dickie he’s just been immense, wins most balls and Matty back scoring for fun, plus him and Henry work well together.

Where do you think you will finish in the league this season?

Definitely in the playoffs. 4th or 5th.

What do you know about Shrewsbury?

Not a lot really, apart from what I saw of them at our place. They weren’t strong enough to get through, but they parked the bus well against us. We just couldn’t get through their defence.

What do you think the score will be?

I’d love a win (wouldn’t we all) realistically think 1-1, if they play like at ours. Although we are on that winning streak again.

Big thanks to Paul, hope you enjoy the game.

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts on our League 1 away game against Bristol Rovers.

“Van Gogh, cut off his ear for a smile, ear for a smile eh, lucky the owd bugger didn’t fancy a quick wriggle.”

“Been a strange week or so watching Salop, two wins against established League One outfits coupled with the Tranmere horror show, but to be fair theres nothing to be negative about from Saturdays performance against the owd fermented orchard swillers.”

“Salop were comfortable winners in utterly horrendous conditions, wind more potent than Stan Ogdens after sampling one of Hilda’s tripe n milk platters. It wasn’t a game to write home about but we were easily the best side, big thumbs up to Sam in sticking with four at the back and for once our limited resources in midfield helped us with Sam going for three up top. Me and my mucker Ross said months ago we should try Udoh, Lang and Cummings together and it reaped some reward. Not going to beat around the bush but Rovers were complete and utter dogshyte, I didn’t realise how poor they’ve turned, most of the chances in the game came Salops way and I can only remember Max making one really decent save. All the attacking was from Salop and man of the match has to go to Daniel Udoh, utterly worked his scrotum off again, running down the channels and causing all sorts of owd nuisance and bother. To be fair all three frontmen worked there socks off, Cummings maybe a culprit of a couple of missed chances but couldn’t fault the effort but his booking although silly did make me laugh, it’s important to have characters in the dressing room, the game hardly has any anymore its good to see. Lang another who I thought was class, he used the ball very well and bags of effort.”

“Despite it looking a bit light we won the midfield battle, again fairplay to Davey Edwards another faultless performance mon, again showing his high level of experience. He’s a type of player who can do the pretty stuff but not afraid to get stuck in, considering his so called fragile fitness state hes been cracking lately and a great return to form from the lad. Vela was very neat and tidy too, a player you can see who will get better as match fitness improves. Laurent not the best game bit indecisive at times but overall like most of the others put a good shift in.”

“Not many times you will see four recognised centre half’s all playing at the back but refreshingly it worked. Pierre and Landell had little to do in all honesty but Beckles and Ro-Shaun were on the whole very decent, getting forward where they can, but in honesty the back four will rarely have an easier day the owd Pirates were that poor.”

“Overall very pleased with the game, everyone worked very hard but quality football was at a premium, it was a lottery at times due to the swirling gale.”

“Still unconvinced about Sir Samuel but two decent wins in the last 8 days, the changes in formation have been refreshing and hopefully time to put a decent run together with a hard few games coming up but on the plus side theres no midweek fixtures this month and that will surely help Salop with maximum rest time between games and some matches against some higher placed teams in the division where Salop seem to step up an extra gear when facing them.”

“I’ve seen that Neil Critchley is Blackpool bound, another whos done his coaching at U23 level with no league experience, it seems a few teams are shying away from big name appointments. I may be sounding two faced but it could be time to cut Sam some slack and get behind him a bit, I know its easier for me to say after a win but I do worry if we do get rid who do we actually get in.”

“Lets hope we stick to these refreshing four at the back formations and can at least enjoy the football at last. Still very unsure on Sam but he’s here to stay so lets make the most of it.”

MATCH PREVIEW

Sam Northwood previews today’s away League 1 game against Bristol Rovers.

Town travel to Bristol Rovers which will no doubt be a tough game after Towns recent form.

Earlier this season Town lost 4-3 to Bristol Rovers with former Shrews captain Abu Ogogo scoring the late winner. Abu will be unavailable for this game though due to a red card last time out during their 3-0 defeat at Sunderland.

Bristol Rovers currently sit 13th having only won one game since Christmas. They are in as bad form as Town and could be an interesting game. Former Town youth team player Josh Ginnelly and ex winger Alex Rodman could both play.

After a defeat on Tuesday night it has sent Shrewsbury back down to earth after the win last Saturday. Ricketts has revealed that he has been keeping an eye academy player Charlie Caton so it’s likely he could travel to Bristol.

My Predicted XI’s

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts on our League 1 home game against Tranmere Rovers.

“Can you see her belly button Biggles??? No mon it must be underneath all these folds.”

“A desperatly frustrating and poor night at the Meddah compounding my fears that Sir Samuel is not the man to take us forward as a team, I don’t think the axe will go though but can we really risk another season with him at the helm?? Sadly I’ve got to say we cant.”

“After the confidence boosting win of Saturday Salop should have come into this game full of beans, but the first half we lacked any form of belief, leadership or any basic organisation skills. It was like a new team having there first match together, defending wise we was utterly woeful, unable to mark players in the box is appaling at this level. Young Ramsey looked like Hartley Hare startled in the headlights so woefully out of his depth, Tyler Blackett having him everytime I’m still unsure on the need to have him here with Love and Sears on the books even Omar can play there, it’s puzzling like so much of what Sam does.”

“2-0 at half time didnt flatter Tranmere at all it could have been more, this is a side on a more woeful run than Town who have hardly scored the last few games yet we manage to make them look like world beaters. Shambolic is the only way to describe the opening 45 minutes, putrid standard Meddah fayre.”

“To give Salop their dues they came out guns blazing second half with a lot more urgency and intensity to our play but so we bloody should considering the opposition in front of us. Tranmere looked utterly knackered in the second half, the introduction of Cummings was a good one he looked really hungry and was instrumental in most of our positive football in the second half, a real livewire performance. A toss up between him and the equally impressive Callum Lang for the Man Of The Match honours, class finish from the former. Our midfield was poor Tuesday in all honesty, Laurent’s shooting boots went missing, Edwards understandbly tired and jaded and poor Sean Goss looked utterly lost on what he was meant to do, we craved leadership. Despite the comeback to 2-2 and chances fluffed, like Saturday our football lacked any kind of pattern, no real tactics to it, just a case of hit and hope for the best at times. Ricketts is a desperate man and its showing in our style of play.”

“Tranmere’s winner was utterly inexcusable, utterly woeful defending yet again although brilliant most of the season the defending Tuesday reminded of the calamatious Ratcliffe season of 2002/03, silly to compare I know but it had that look. Tranmere’s winner was an utter kick in the teeth but for some reason after our first 45 minutes I had a sad inevitabilty it was going to happen.”

“Still fuming from Tuesday so sorry if the report is a bit negative or short on content, to Bristol Rovers on Saturday god bloody knows how we will get on I’ve given up predicting.”

CORBIN’S VIEW FROM THE STANDS

Our young inspirational reporter and massive Shrewsbury Town fan Corbin gives us his thoughts on our home game against Tranmere Rovers.

“Back to the Meadow three days after our first league win since December against Doncaster. This time up was Tranmere a team who’s only win of 2020 was a 2-1 third round FA Cup replay against Watford, a team who hadn’t won in the league since 21st December and a team that can’t keep clean sheets.”

“Buoyed with our win over Doncaster, giving us a 15 point gap to Tranmere it seemed like no better time to play them. Ricketts set his team up differently to Saturday’s win, due to the injury to McAleny in came Goss and the rest of the team was unchanged and includes captain Dave Edwards who limped off on Saturday.”

“We started off on front foot with Laurent sliding in and Udoh who nearly caught Tranmere cold after 2 minutes but his shot hit the side netting. The game was barely 10 minutes old when we cleared a corner but Tranmere’s winger Blackett Taylor who tormented Ramsey at right back most of the game, drilled his cross which was flicked on by Vaughan with Mark Ellis beating Beckles to the ball and smashing it in. The goal sparked 5 minutes of madness as we seemed to lose all ideas giving the ball away and just 5 minutes later the ball was struck from the edge of the box, O’Learys save palmed straight into the run of Morris who slotted it home for 0-2, he reacted quickest whilst our defenders were like statues.”

“The shock around the ground was everywhere fans shouting almost stunned, this shouldn’t be happening 2 nil down against a bottom 3 side after 15 minutes gone just can’t happen. It was almost criminal defending we were wobbling, a free kick 5 minutes later gave us some hope as Goss swung it in the ball was half cleared then Edwards smashed it goalbound but it took a deflection for a corner. Tranmere came at us again down the left and were unlucky not to be 3 nil up, the only other half chances Shrewsbury had fell to Goss and Pierre the latter forcing the keeper into a save.”

The second half started and two was nearly three agains as Blackett Taylor cut inside and shot just over the bar. Shrewsbury needed something to happen and fast, Cummings looked like the outlet as a half time sub for Vela. His direct runs from wide right, his first shot tamely wide and his second after cutting inside made the keeper save another. A Cummings run won us a corner which Goss swinged in to the back post where our beast of a centre back Pierre rose to meet and headed into the net, one goal back with 55 minutes gone.”

“The goal gave us belief and you could see Tranmere getting deeper, Cummings from the right and Lang from the left were starting to have more of the ball as we sought an equaliser and just 5 minutes after Pierre’s goal it came. Lang’s cut inside and hit a curling effort into the top corner 2-2 with 30 minutes to go. Suddenly that feeling we had at half time had gone as we were on the front foot and pressing Tranmere it almost looked like we could go on and win it. The crowd had found its voice and the m noise levels cranked up with every move forward.”

“Tranmere had a rare second half attack which nearly made it 2-3. Cummings, Beckles and Laurent had good chances for us to take the lead. The game was all us as we entered the added time and we wasted two set pieces, the second one the Tranmere keeper kicked it up field and Blackett Taylor ran after it beating Goss for pace, Ramsey ran over to hold him up but before he could tackle Taylor smashed it past O’Leary in the 95th minute. It was absolutely gutting, made worse by the over joyous Tranmere fans running towards us in blocks 18 and 19 goading us.”

“The ref blew his whistle for the last time and we had lost, a sickening way too lose especially after showing the character to not know when we were beat. Lang’s goal was the stand out moment, the noise levels at full time were one of anger not towards the players but towards Ricketts mans there were not a lot of happy fans as Dad and me left.”

“So the good work from Saturday was undone tonight by some shocking defending and some wasteful chances, the ref was poor again but not to blame for the result. The gap is back to 12 points with 12 games to go, many people have said if this was a normal season then we would be fighting relegation. On paper we look a very good side and some would say a squad on par with the team from 2018 but nothing is ever won on paper its won on the green stuff we play on week in week out. So the questions that went quiet after Saturday will return, is Ricketts the man to take us forward? Many think not.”

“My Man of The Match was a tricky one to pick but Callum Lang gets the nod, he scored a stunning goal for 2-2, his workrate all night was faultless covering the defence and great lung bursting runs as we counter attacked. Cummings if he had scored might have got the vote as for his 45 minutes he did more than most to drag us back into the game.”

“So next up is another huge game against a team who also have only won once this year in the league, their early season form has them 4 points above us. Bristol Rovers away is a tricky place to go, at least Ogogo is suspended. I won’t be at the game and though my Dad has a ticket he is yet to decide if he goes as it is his birthday on Monday so he wants some weekend beers.”

“Love & Peace, Corbin”

Thanks to Corbin for his thoughts on the game against Tranmere.

MATCH PREVIEW

Sam Northwood previews today’s home League 1 game against Tranmere Rovers.

Town host Tranmere hoping they can build on their important win against Doncaster.

Earlier this season Town won 1-0 at Prenton Park with Aaron Pierre getting the goal.

Tranmere currently sit in the relegation zone with only Southend and Bolton below them. They have only won five games this season and haven’t won since before Christmas so are low on confidence.

After a tactical change for the win on Saturday it is important that another win comes here and Ricketts can prove that he is turning it around and can be trusted. Some fans still see it as papering over the cracks but we will have to see. Dave Edwards is likely to miss the game following his injury on Saturday as will Conor McAleny who has a hamstring injury and will be out for a number of weeks.

My Predicted XI’s

Shrewsbury Town:

O’Leary

Ebanks Landell

Beckles

Udoh

Tranmere Rovers:

WHO ARE YA? TRANMERE ROVERS

Here at “Going Down The Oteley Road” we will be speaking to fans of our opposition throughout the season. Ahead of our League One game at home against Tranmere Rovers, we had a chat with a Rovers fan.

What’s your name?

Sue Day.

Where are you from?

Born in Staffordshire now living in Market Drayton, Shropshire.

How long have you supported Tranmere?

Been a Tranmere fan for 30+ years.

Who is your favourite ever Tranmere player?

Pat Nevin, a right little Rottweiler.

Who is your favourite ever Tranmere manager?

Has to be the gentleman that was Johnny King, a true ambassador who knew how to get the team playing. Although, the same could be said about John Aldridge in his early management of Tranmere.

Who should we watch out for from the current Tranmere team?

Keiron Morris, a demon with the ball down the wing.

Where do you think you will finish in the league this season?

Hopefully we will manage to survive around 19th and I would be happy but I am fully prepared for the worst.

What do you know about Shrewsbury?

I work with a lot of Shrewsbury fans who are constantly singing the praises of the team. As I live locally I also visit the Severn Theatre often.

What do you think the score will be?

On current form Shrewsbury should win but our luck has to change sometime, so lets be optimistic and say 1-2 ( although if we can just take a point i will be happy)

Big thanks to Sue, hope you enjoy the game.

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts on our League 1 home game against Doncaster Rovers.

“Did you see me in my crotchless tiger skin briefs Mildred?? Not once Bizzy did i even get the merest glimpse of your dishelved gordily stained love blob containers.”

“It was far from pretty can’t disguise the fact the footy on show was piss poor at times, but its a bloody win and by god we needed it, everybody put a huge shift in today as said the quality wasn’t great but they worked there socks off banishing any rumours of dressing room unrest with Sir Samuel.”

“The swirling wind made the probability of any decent football being played quite low, we did ride our luck at times but some brilliance from O’Leary who was instrumental in keeping a clean sheet. I’ve also got to give Ricketts his dues in reverting to four at the back, it’s something we’ve been asking for for a long time especially at home games where teams are there for the taking.”

“First half was a bit of a non event in all honesty we were slow with our passing, maybe the change in formation had a factor in this as we were second to the ball most times as if we havent quite switched. Still we had a sniff at goal though, Captain Marvel himself Davy Edwards should have done better with a chance in the six yard box. Donny were pressing forward but like so many games we were outstanding at the back, only having 2 centre halfs in the brilliant Aaron Pierre and Ebanks they weren’t phased at all. Nil nil at half time was a fair reflection on a familar turgid standard of football at the owd Meddah.”

“Got to give Salop there dues they came out all guns blazing in the second half, far more urgent and purposeful. Lang was outstanding running after everything he could and Daniel Udoh with the energy of a ketamine addict with tourettes, I do like the lads effort but sadly our most natural scorer was sat on the bench. We did look the most likley to score in the second half though and a winner finally came and it only could be one person and thats man of the match David Edwards, arguably his best performance since returning to Town and his first league goal for Salop in 13 years. Amongst the average football around him he was simply superb, full of energy which is amazing considering the football he’s play, instrumental in most of our play his higher division footballing mind shone today. He seemed a step ahead of most on the pitch, it is great to have hom involved at the club again, future coach material for sure and I think he may be actually to nice a guy to be an actual manager though.”

“After the goal it was tense viewing, we do what we always do and sit back on a lead and it made tense viewing. The woodwork came to our rescue again. Big thumbs up to Vela considering he ain’t played for ages, looked a tidy player obvious signs of rustiness but a very decent debut.”

“On final reflections it was a good win with a much improved second half, but there still seems to be a disjointed style to our football, I’m still unsure on whether Sam is the man to take us forward but we’re safe now and its nice he at least had the guts to change the formation. In 12 months do you see a big improvment under Sam?? Sadly I’ll say no again, but he’s going nowhere and its only best we get behind him and the team, catcalling and nastiness will get us nowhere. An unconvincing win but bloody needed, maybe i shouldnt be so overcritical and enjoy the win.”

“Bring on Micky Mellon and the Tranmere lads, again I expect a tight and unconvincing win. McAleny will be a big miss along with Edwards.”

CORBIN’S VIEW FROM THE STANDS

Our young inspirational reporter and massive Shrewsbury Town fan Corbin gives us his thoughts on our home victory against Doncaster.

“A game against high flying Doncaster at home, could we get a win to finally end our winless league run of 10 games. A run that’s amongst our worst of recent times.”

“No former striker in Fejiri to haunt us with his red card for Doncaster recently but former players in Ennis and Taylor being other possible threats to us.”

“Sam Ricketts rang in the changes once again, when results aren’t going our way he does seem to swap players around trying to find the right team to play his tactics his way and with our injury table over flowing it gave a chance for others to shine. On paper it looked like three at the back but we set up with four at the back in a 4-3-3 formation that in defence was more a 4-5-1 formation, Josh Vela with his first start since signing in January slotting in alongside Dave Edwards and Josh Laurent, the back 4 of Ramsey, Ebanks Landell, Pierre, Omar with McAleny Udoh and Lang as a front three, Max kept goal again.”

“The game started slowly with both teams cancelling each other out with a lot of niggly and needless stoppages by a whistle happy referee which stopped the game from flowing in the early stages. Neither team creating much with no end product, it was 15 minutes in that Doncaster had a first chance but that was headed over and Josh Laurent was yet again on his marauding runs but lacked any end product. About 25 minutes gone and two chances came and went first Vela shot was high and then Edwards with a shot but their keeper made a simple save. We had a corner on 30 minutes, the cross from Vela assisted by the wind caused a melee in the visitors box but despite the scramble no one could make that telling touch and the keeper managed to hold on to the goal bound effort. The last tester of a shot came from Doncaster in the first of two minutes added at the end of the half but Max got his whole body behind it, 0-0 at half time seemed to be a score us Shrewsbury fans are used to this season. We probably edged the first half but both teams carried little threat, the most telling stats of the first half was amount of fouls 17 in total disrupted the game.”

“The second half started and it seemed we were still in the dressing room as we were slow and allowed Doncaster to get their passing game going. An edge of the box shot bound for the top corner was superbly saved by O’Leary and a few minutes later a shot from 25 yards hit the post. The visitors were piling on the pressure and we struggled to get out of our own half but then on 60 minutes McAleny lost his marker on the left and he rifled a shot towards goal that was smartly saved but Doncaster pushed us back. We got sloppy with the ball, Pierre advanced forward and his jinking run caused panic at the back but his shot was off target, Goss came on for the injured McAleny and had a chance from a free kick which was narrowly over the bar.”

“Then the decisive moment, one that all us Town fans had nearly forgot we scored! A clever quick throw in from Vela into the box to Lang with his back to goal and he turned the defender and dug out a cross to the back post, local lad Dave Edwards unmarked planted his header into the net despite defenders trying to keep it out 1-0 to Shrewsbury with 75 minutes gone. The crowd were very happy jumping for joy and celebrating, the whole team ran to the bench as the subs, Ricketts, the staff and whole team embraced each other in joyous scenes.”

“The goal gave us belief and we looked sharper going forward and Lang had a deflected shot go wide, a minute later Laurent with one just over. Dave Edwards who was everywhere and playing like a captain should chased down a loose ball as the defender cleared it he caught Dave, this led to him limping off the field, lets hope he is fine as we need his experience, Walker replaced him and Cummings on for Lang.”

“Our nerves started jangling and you could sense the tension in the crowd as entering the last five minutes Doncaster threw everything at us and Max O’Leary rushed out twice to deny their shots. 5 minutes of time added on did nothing to help our concerns as we had seen it all too often this season, conceding late goals when we have been 1 -0 up but we hung on to 3 absolutely massive points.”

“My Man of The Match today is a clear winner captain marvel, local boy Dave Edwards one of the best performances he has had in the blue and amber since returning in January 2019. He was everywhere today helping defend set pieces, passes into front guys and was the right man in the right place for his headed goal which he took well. Lets hope his injury isn’t a season ending one as we need more of the same from Dave going forward. There were other notable performances Max O’Leary earned his wages today for sure, was very commanding and pulled off two very top quality saves.”

“So finally after two months of league football we win again, the scoreline has a familiar sound to it a 1 goal winning margin. All our wins being by the odd goal its never easy being a Salop fan and this game wasn’t a classic with only three shots on target but the one that mattered got us 3 points and a 15 point buffer to the relegation places. Perhaps Ricketts hasn’t had that call to the chairman’s office due to that, we have injuries but it’s the same for other teams and thats why its a squad game and not a team game. He is the manager after all, I would put Pierre in midfield as he is just a beast but Ricketts is way too cautious for that!”

“We go again Tuesday night with the return of Mickey Mellon, his previous result was a 6-0 loss for him and a repeat of that would make us all very happy!”

“See you all there.”

“Love & Peace, Corbin”

Thanks to Corbin for his thoughts on the game against Doncaster.
