MATCH PREVIEW

Sam Northwood previews today’s home League 1 game against Doncaster Rovers.

Town host Doncaster with Shrewsbury needing to improve quickly.

Earlier this season Town lost 2-0 at the Keepmoat in a disappointing performance.

Doncaster currently sit 11th in the league and only 5 points off the play offs. Former Town players Jon Taylor and Fejiri Okenabirhie play for Donny but Fejiri won’t be available due to him getting a red card last time out.

After another defeat on Saturday the pressure continues to build on the manager and the players too perform. The first 60 minutes at Fratton Park was promising with Town on top but still couldn’t find the back of the net. Town only have Josh Laurent as their fully fit central midfielder so will struggle for options. It might see a centre back fill in as a holding midfielder.

My Predicted XI’s

Shrewsbury Town:

O’Leary

Ebanks Landell

Williams

Beckles

Ramsey

Pierre

Laurent

McAleny

Golbourne

Lang

Udoh

Doncaster Rovers:

Dieng

Halliday

Score Prediction: Shrewsbury Town 1-1 Doncaster Rovers

WHO ARE YA? DONCASTER ROVERS

Here at “Going Down The Oteley Road” we will be speaking to fans of our opposition throughout the season. Ahead of our League One game at home against Doncaster, we had a chat with a Rovers fan.

What’s your name?

David Duffy.

Where are you from?

Doncaster.

How long have you supported Doncaster?

32 years since my Dad took me to my first game at the old stadium Belle Vue.

Who is your favourite ever Doncaster player?

James Coppinger no explanation needed the man is a Rovers legend. He has served the club for 16 years and goes from strength to strength.

Who is your favourite ever Doncaster manager?

Sean O’Driscoll. Rovers played some of the best football I’ve ever seen under him each game was a joy to watch.

Who should we watch out for from the current Doncaster team?

Tom Anderson, centre back. An absolute brick wall, a traditional strong no nonsense centre back.

Where do you think you will finish in the league this season?

I think we will just sneak into the play offs.

What do you know about Shrewsbury?

Not a lot to be honest other than I was rooting for you not long back, you did so well and on such a small budget.

What do you think the score will be?

A tight game 2-0 to the Rovers.

Big thanks to David, hope you enjoy the game.

CHATTING TO AN EX SALOPIAN…DAVID HUNT

We’ve been lucky enough at “Going Down The Oteley Road” to speak to some ex Shrewsbury Town players, this week we speak to ex midfielder David Hunt who was at Shrewsbury for a season and a half in 2007.

How did it feel making your debut for Shrewsbury Town?

Always nice to make my debut for a new club.

What was the highlight of your time in Shropshire?

Making some friends for life.

What was it like playing at for Shrewsbury?

It was frustrating as I was injured when I arrived and the managers at the time weren’t very good, this impacted my experience.

Who was the best player you played with in Blue and Amber?

Ben Davies and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Who was the best player you came up against for Shrewsbury?

Clint Dempsey.

What made you decide to be a midfielder?

I was bored defending the whole time and knew I could do more than just try and kick the wingers.

Who was the biggest influence on your career?

Myself.

Who was the biggest joker in the changing room at Shrewsbury?

I loved to play some pranks. The boys that travelled in from Liverpool were easy prey.

Where do you think Shrewsbury will finish this season in League One?

Bottom half the table.

What football team do you support?

A frustrated Gooner.

Who was your favourite player as a child?

Ryan Giggs, however I had zero tricks in the locker.

Why do you love football?

It was a sanctuary for escaping the issues that go on in life. If played correctly it can be the most beautiful game on the planet.

Huge thanks to David for chatting with us about his time at Shrewsbury and for bringing back some great memories from years gone by.

FAN OF THE WEEK #22 – PETER KINDNESS

This weeks fan of the week is Peter Kindness(Left On The photo).

Where are you from?

Droitwich.

How long have you supported Shrewsbury?

Supported Town since moving to England in 1978.

What was the first game you went to?

First game was Newcastle at home in 1980 we won 1-0.

Who is your favourite Town player of all time?

Favourite all time player is Colin Griffin, hard as nails.

Who is your favourite Salop manager of all time?

Favourite manager, Graham Turner for obvious reasons.

Which do you prefer Gay Meadow or Montgomery Waters Meadow?

Gay Meadow because I spent so much time there, the atmosphere and the character. That said the new ground was needed and brings in much needed revenue.

What has been your favourite away game?

Favourite Away game (so many good days), as a one off game Villa away in 87 was great despite the result. There was a massive Salop following that day. But nothing beats Wrexham away for a whole host of reasons.

What has been your favourite moment as a Shrewsbury Town fan?

Favourite moment for me beating Ipswich in the cup, I was 10 at the time and we’d beaten the current uefa cup holders. Then the Leicester game that followed.

What is your favourite Salop kit?

Favourite Salop kit again unpopular but for me, white Greenhous one with the blue shrew from early 90s.

Where do you think we will finish this season?

Personally I think we will finish lower/mid table sort of 12th to 15th.

Why do you love supporting Shrewsbury Town?

I fell in love with football the first time I went, as a teenager it was going all over the country with my brother and my mates. Nowadays I go with my kids. It’s actually quite difficult to answer this one, but I guess it’s about the ups and downs, the emotions. I don’t get those emotions watching any other team, hard to put this into words really.

Massive thanks to Peter for answering our questions and for being this weeks fan of the week. If you fancy becoming a fan of the week just drop us a message on either our Facebook page https://m.facebook.com/GoingDownTheOteleyRoad/ or on Twitter @GDTORsalop

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts on our League 1 away game against Portsmouth.

“Are you going to come quietly Sir?? No owd lad its just the way i walk.”

“A choatic day travel wise meant a taxi home from Newport, South Wales which made the group of 8 of us 280 sheets lighter gone 2am before we actually arrived in Salop, trees on the line, lines flooded utter carnage and after a sadly predictable 2 nil reverse its not what you wanted.”

“Pre game travel was a breeze, the jollops were flowing, the banter was flying and owd Mallet was on fine form. We touched down in Pompey shy of midday and made our way to the Newcombe Arms it was a tidy boozer, a home fans pub but everyone was friendly as hell including celebrity fan Mr Portsmouth himself minus his wig today, he gets alot of bad press but i found him a very intelligent owd lad with a huge passion for his team and football in general and that cant be knocked and was a pleasure to be in his company. The aleage was in full flow, a couple of our party were struggling jollop wise but for once I wasn’t too bad.”

“Hearing the team news just gone 2pm left me slightly puzzled, Beckles playing right wing back but bizarrely we had three of them on the bench, Udoh a single man upfront, talk of Ricketts losing the plot again was on the agenda, the increased levels of localised inclemency were rising by the minute (it was pissing down and windy as f##k) and we got to Fratton Park. I do like my visits here it’s always a cracking atmosphere and still has the feel of an old school ground, despite our under achivements this and last season it still feels bloody good we’re in the same league as giants such as Portsmouth, Sunderland and Ipswich all of which graced the Premier League recently.”

“The owd breezes made the game a more level playing field and to be fair Salop first half were very good, some very decent football was played with Laurent and McAleny the main instigators, again the Fleetwood lad the pick of the bunch in Salop colours again today. The Cod Army must have a bloody decent side for him not to be considered, some crackin business from Salop albeit on loan, despite our negative style of play at times he gives us something different he’s a far more direct player than others in the team, not afraid to cut in and shoot wherever he is and we come to another good Ricketts find and thats ex Telford mon Daniel Udoh you can see he’s really revelling and enjoying his chance to play full time football. So chuffed Salop took a chance with some non league talent, he was buzzing around everywhere being the sole occupant uptop as established Pompey were struggling to know what to do with him. But despite our superioity in the opening 45 actual efforts on target were at a premium and its getting all to familar sadly.”

“Our good play continued second half, a big shout out to Sean Goss another outstanding effort from the lad, the one thing you can say is that the lads in main are still playing for Ricketts but I still think there maybe a problem with one or two. The improvment from the Accy shambles was there for all to see, sadly to get results you need to score and Pompey took the lead just after the hour, you could see the Salop lads tiring then but still they kept battling. Once again the defence was a tad shaky at times, Ebanks was top notch though, the backline have been outstanding all season so very hard to criticise but with such a dearth of goals for Salop any conceded we’re sadly in the shyte. But still Town battled hard for an equaliser but Marquis killed the game with a second goal. Salop were looking very tired but Edwards looked on his last legs for a 34 year old with injury problems to play so many games in a short amount of time is a big ask, he’s craving for a rest but theres injuries all over the place coupled with Ricketts signing players who are not even fit makes team selection a utter minefield.”

“Final verdict is that Salop on the whole were vastly improved from the Accy shambles, we showed far more desire and drive. I think the pressures off Town a bit away from home, on the whole the 300 Salopians present really got behind the team and a stark contrast to the toxic nastiness of last Tuesday night. Can’t fault the effort but your not going to get anywhere not scoring goals.”

“Two home games await and this could be make or break for Sir Samuel, if we dont win any of the matches I feel it will be bye bye Ricketts. Long term I just don’t see him being the man, the lack of goals and negative tactics will maybe sadly be his undoing, hopefully we can get a win somewhere though as the effort was sure bloody there at Fratton Park.”

“Thanks to Goph, Whittler, Mallet, Preecy, Les, Maggott, Holtzy, Griff, Oli Bromley and others for a brilliant day, can’t beat a good owd train journey following the Town.”

CORBIN’S VIEW FROM THE STANDS

Our young inspirational reporter and massive Shrewsbury Town fan Corbin gives us his thoughts on our away defeat against Portsmouth.

“My first ever visit to Fratton Park to watch Shrewsbury play against the might of Pompey another ex Premier League ground. A very wet and windy day with Storm Dennis, we were worried as we travelled on the coach down to the game as whether it would go ahead but when we arrived it was raining heavy and a little windy. A pre match meal at the busiest McDonalds m ever was very welcome to get out of the weather and then our walk to the ground in the rain, we walked the wrong way and ended up amongst thousands of home fans who were all very friendly and helped my Dad and me get to the away entrance by which time we were both soaked. Dad stood in a massive puddle and got his feet very wet but I couldn’t stop laughing as his trainers squelched. One advantage of going the wrong way was I did get to pose outside the famous black and white building at the home end entrance.”

“We got to our seats 15 minutes before kick off, Sam Ricketts was looking for an end to our winless run of 2020 and had made changes again Max O’Leary back between the sticks, Sam Hart, Pierre, Ebanks , Williams in and Beckles moved to right back. Edwards, Goss and Laurent in middle with McAleny and Udoh leading the line.”

“For such a big ground and 18,000 fans in the ground it was us 300+ fans from Shrewsbury singing and making all the noise with the help of the drum and me starting some songs off. The game kicked off with us wearing our winless white shirts.”

“It took us around 15 minutes to get going as Pompey hit the front foot first with a scuffed shot but Max saved easy and then a high and wide effort over the bar. McAleny started pulling the strings going forward as he looked most likely to score our first goal with his driving intent his shot was blocked and Laurent on the follow up also had a shot blocked, then from a corner we wasted Pompey counter attacked and Ro Shaun tripped his man on halfway and was shown a yellow card, just two minutes later Ebanks Landell went in the book for another late challenge. Two of our back three were one bad tackle from having an early bath with 70 plus minutes to go, this didn’t faze us as we moved forward. McAleny again with a neat one two with Laurent but his shot saved as it nearly snuck in the corner. Beckles had a header shortly afterwards blocked, we had a free kick right on half time and Goss whipped it in and Ebanks Landell put it wide as the half time whistle went.”

“Our thoughts at half time were upbeat and positive we have arrived at an unbeaten at home Pompey side and matched them stride for stride despite it being 0-0 we felt we had the better of the half.”

“We made a substitution at half time, Ramsey for Hart in a like for like change. We started straight on the front foot forcing a corner and the game began to be disrupted by niggly fouls that the referee started to become whistle happy but then Udoh ran at their defence drawing a foul on edge of the box, Sean Goss stepped up and beat the defence and keeper with a near post effort that hits side netting.”

“McAleny pulling the strings again stings the gloves of the keeper and a minute later Dave Edwards missed with a shot wide, we were very much in this all we needed was a goal. Ebanks Landell with the next chance which went narrowly over but then as in so many games this season we switched off and at the other end a cross from a Pompey sub on the field only 7 mins swings a ball in one of the smaller players on the pitch heads it past O’Leary 1-0 to Pompey on 64 minutes.”

“From this point on our game seemed to go down, we added reinforcements 3 minutes after the goal Lang for Udoh but our best player on the pitch McAleny the one who was our biggest threat and very creative maked way for Cummings. Some fans understandably frustrated with Ricketts for not taking a risk and taking a midfielder or defender off for that extra man in attack but then his tactics have been questioned so much this season.”

“The changes to our front line made little difference as Pompey started dominating we perhaps in chasing the game started leaving pockets of space for Pompey to expose. More chances came for Pompey as they pushed for number two only Beckles with a shot over the bar any real effort we had but then the referee who hadn’t missed much waved away a foul on Goss, the ball forward fell to Marquis and his shot seemed to bobble in front of O’Leary and it was 2-0.”

“It was tough at 1-0 down with our lack of goals but 2-0 down with 10 minutes to go almost impossible, but we never gave up a goal in last part of game could give us at least a point. Callum Lang tried to create a goal himself but the defender clearly shovels the ball away with his arm, we all screamed penalty but it was waved away, Lang the chased after the referee and was booked for his protests. As the game entered injury time Laurent went on one of his marauding runs but his shot was saved in the top left corner by the keeper to keep the score 2-0.”

“The ref blew his whistle and the game was up, our winless run is now 10 league games and our only win of 2020 was against Bristol City in the Cup.”

“We left empty handed but promised much more to many of us its obvious we need a goal getter but sometimes effort gets rewards and for all our huff and puff we didn’t do enough and when half chances fell our way we were just unlucky or not clinical enough. This poor form needs to turn around and for the first time since Christmas we have a good week between league games when we face Doncaster at home next Saturday and quickly followed by another Tuesday night game at home to Tranmere. If we get four points from those two games it will make a lot of us a lot happier than our very long journey home from Portsmouth.”

“My Man Of The Match was Conor McAleny, a forward almost playing as an attacking midfielder but he isn’t sulking and for 67 minutes he was by far our best player, most things went through him, his link up play is really good and he knows where the target is just a shame Rickett’s doesn’t share us fans visions and keep him on pitch longer as defences tire who we face.”

“So now the questions are building with no answers in sight the obvious one is Sam Ricketts the right man to get us out of this? Or does he get yet more time? It’s a difficult decision for our Chairman but for us fans we have to put up with it, for now Sam seems to try and deflect the poor feeling with our form talking about the future but managers are judged on results of here and now and many a manager has lost his job for less. Time will tell but we will follow the Town through thick and thin, whoever is the man directing the ship!”

“Love & Peace, Corbin”

Thanks to Corbin for his thoughts on the game against Portsmouth.

MATCH PREVIEW

Sam Northwood previews today’s away League 1 game against Portsmouth.

Town make the long trip to Portsmouth needing a result to bring back some confidence.

Earlier this season Town won 1-0 against Portsmouth with a memorable late winner from Ryan Giles who is now at Coventry.

Portsmouth who sit 6th and in the play offs in League One, they lost their last game 1-0 against Coventry which was their first defeat of 2020. Former Town player James Bolton is likely to play.

After another disappointing performance on Tuesday and many fans turning on Ricketts with chants and boos aimed his way it is crucial that Town win here if Ricketts wants to change some views of Town fans. It is unlikely that a win will come here but this season Shrewsbury have performed better when being the underdog.

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts on our League 1 home game against Accrington Stanley.

“She could ride like a prized Minehead donkey but was never quite the same after her yeast infection.”

“Dear ohh dear one of the most misreable games I’ve been in a longtime against Accy, it doesn’t get much worse than this, the team seem to be a right mess and the supporters really voiced there opinion on Ricketts.”

“Tuesday was quite toxic at times, the cup run has sadly masked what a poor team we are at the moment, there’s definite quality in the squad but the right mix, formation and motivation levels are sadly lacking. Think its safe to say the majority of Salop fans want a change of gaffer now, coupled with a disinterested look on some of the players faces I fear there is no way back for Sam now, logically though what good would sacking Sam do now though?? Its mid Febuary we’re not going up or down and a new gaffer can’t bring any players in, but the fans really voiced there thoughts and sadly as I said can’t see a way back for Sam.”

“The game like so many was turgid and forgettable, Accy were no great shakes at all. The insistence to play 5 at the back against limited opposition was laughable sorry to say, Ricketts just isn’t going to change his ways and despite the numbers at the back the amount of space Brooksides finest had to net the first was shocking.”

“There was simply no pattern or flow to our game, players unsure of tactics, players not sure what there role was, Lang a prime example who cut a very frustrated figure. Midfield look tired and as confused as a paddleless Steve Redgrave on the Llangollen Rapids. The long term injury to Norbs is a huge blow there’s no clout in the middle, what we would do for a Grant or Abu Ogogo type player now, Edwards gave his all as normal but he cut a tired figure. I’m not making excuses but Salop have had a punishing schedule of games which hasnt helped.”

“Worrying thing is now the defence is looking shaky so any goals conceded now means we’re not going win games as we are scoring so few, well we asked Cummings to start and again he looked bang average and off the pace, not sure what the crack is with him as there’s obvious quality there but he just don’t look right to me. Once again our tactics are not helping them, Fejiri scoring at Donny again another kick in the owd ballbag for Salop fans.”

“Think Ricketts will get slightly more time, the Tranmere game will be make or break for him, can’t see us getting much from the next two games but anything less than a win then its curtains.”

“Plus point from Saturday was the continued cracking form of Connor McAleny the only player on the field that actually wanted to create something, looks a top player and very rare you get loan signings from teams of his quality from the same division.”

“Too many negatives to mention but one of the most puzzling ones is the dip in form of Donald Love he looks shot to pieces, suffering the same confidence issues that blighted him at Sunderland gutting a bit because he was arguably our best player early season, definitley needs a arm round his shoulder.”

“Well to a storm ravaged Pompey on Saturday and a 6am leaving time on the train ouchhh haha, a miracle may happen and we could sneak something.”

“Keep the faith and keep supporting them regardless.”

MATCH PREVIEW

Sam Northwood previews tonight’s home League 1 game against Accrington Stanley.

Town host Accrington in a crucial League One fixture for Town.

Earlier this season Town won 3-2 away at Accrington after being 2-0 down, Daniel Udoh scored the winner after Fejiri Okenabirhie equalised.

Accrington currently sit one place below Town in the league table with both teams currently struggling to get a good run of results. Accrington will have a bit more confidence after their win against Wimbledon on Saturday. Shrewsbury will know that they have to keep former player Jordan Clark quiet.

After another disappointing performance at home to MK Dons on Saturday, the pressure is building even higher on Sam Ricketts and he will want to ease the pressure with a win. A draw wouldn’t be good enough amongst Town fans.

Predicted XI’s

Shrewsbury Town:

Murphy

Beckles

Williams

Pierre

Ramsey

Edwards

McAleny

Laurent

Golbourne

Lang

Udoh

Accrington Stanley:
