HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts on our League 1 home game against MK Dons.

“I did promise you a doner kebab my darling sweetheart but im not the one looking and smelling like Nellie the Elephants fanny.”

“Again apoligies for late report, now got a new phone so all back to normal.”

“Cowd owd Saturday and the miserable weather matched the misery on the pitch sadly, entertainment wise it was dreadfully poor and apoligies now for any of my rants but its just so frustrating watching Salop at the moment. Ricketts in the press saying we’re over achieving looking at a top half finish has done little to apease the Meddah faithful, at the moment I’m not really sure where we are heading. Off the field everything is good with Paul Delves added to the boardroom is a major plus, recruitment wise from Sam has generally been good it all seems to stem from our style of football, formations and our blatant inability to break down poor sides who are intent to frustrate us.”

“It’s mid Febuary now and we’re just meandering into a lower half finish, fans wouldn’t mind so much if there was something to shout about, but cup heroics apart our season has been like my sex life, boring and devoid of any action. Despite the gloom and utter purile effluence I had the misfortune to view but you’ve got take some positives. Daniel Udoh take a bow me owd mucker, really ran his socks off and along with the equally impressive Connor McAleney who actually gave it a real go and ran at an awful MK defence, they didnt know what to do with Udoh was the top performer, definitely my Man Of The Match.”

“Cummings apart from the odd flash looked off the boil today but again I keep going on about playing two centre forwards up top, please please could we experiment with Lang and Jason upfront, as for Lang he’s looking a frustrated figure on his day our best player back from an injury though so fitness maybe a issue. But fitness seems to be a issue with a lot of our squad though, reason to worry???”

“We didn’t do enough to press a very poor MK backline, Edwards and Laurent both looked tired today and consquently the flow of our game suffered with this. Another bright spot was young Kayne Ramsey as right wing back, still a strange signing though surely it would be better to nurture a homegrown player like Ryan Sears who has done very litte wrong in my opinion than bring in some Premiership youngster in a quick fix who we are unlikley to sign.”

“Beckles won’t forget that goal in a hurry but what was he doing for the equaliser, it sort of sums him up as a player, flashes of brilliance then heart in mouth worry but a very infectious personality and glad he stayed with Salop in the window.”

“Accy on Tuesday and clueless on how we will end up, they do like to play some footy and our defence looked uncharacteristicy shaky vs MK so we will need to be on our toes. Going to go for a boring 1 nil win. 5700 offical crowd Saturday but looked a lot less, a worrying trait for Sam and STFC when season ticket holders are not coming to games, they missed bugger all though.”

“Keep the faith.”

WHO ARE YA? ACCRINGTON STANLEY

Here at “Going Down The Oteley Road” we will be speaking to fans of our opposition throughout the season. Ahead of our League One game at home against Accrington, we had a chat with a Stanley fan.

What’s your name?

Andy Richards

Where are you from?

Originally from Derbyshire but now live in Accrington.

How long have you supported Accrington Stanley?

This is my 8th season supporting Stanley.

Who is your favourite ever Accrington player?

Got to be Billy Kee. Always had time for the fans. Never refused a photo or autograph. Always had a drink with us in the bar after the match!

Who is your favourite ever Accrington manager?

No question, John Coleman. We probably wouldn’t be in the football league without him, never mind League One!

Who should we watch out for from the current Accrington team?

Jordan Clark, unstoppable when he’s on form. Ross Sykes, young defender with a big future who could be our second million pound sale, after Kayden Jackson (who went to Ipswich).

Where do you think you will finish in the league this season?

I think once we’re safe from relegation we’ll have a late season rally and finish mid table.

What do you know about Shrewsbury?

I’m hoping they’ll be on a low after their FA Cup disappointment. Former players have a habit of scoring against us so we’ll have to watch Omar Beckles!

What do you think the score will be?

I can see a draw, 1-1. Our form hasn’t been good of late. Usually happy with a draw away from home.

Big thanks to Andy, hope you enjoy the game.

Streams whenever possible, highlights and Football League show when I miss it.

What was the first game you went to?

Have sadly yet to go! Lived away from the UK for far too long now.

Who is your favourite Town player of all time?

Ben Davies or maybe Deano – both showed some incredible talent and passion for the club.

Who is your favourite Salop manager of all time?

Askey. Hahaha okay no seriously. Torn between Hurst for providing the most exciting season in my memory and Turner for some good memories and an unbeaten home season!

Jack Grimmer’s 97th minute winner vs Sheff Wed. Was running round the house screaming that night

What is your favourite Salop kit?

Either 2006/2007 or 2017/2018.

CORBIN’S VIEW FROM THE STANDS

Our young inspirational reporter and massive Shrewsbury Town fan Corbin gives us his thoughts on yesterday’s draw at home to MK Dons.

“After what has been a poor week for Shrewsbury with our disappointing performance and defeat against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday Night in the FA Cup, it was back to league action against MK Dons. With this and another home game to come on Tuesday, it was a real chance for us to put the FA Cup disappointment behind us and focus on climbing the League One table.”

“Ricketts rang the changes with home debut’s for Kayne Ramsey, Beckles and Murphy in with Udoh and Cummings leading the line. The game started with niggly fouls as MK Dons seemed right from the off to disrupt play with yet another poor standard League 1 referee who seemed whistle happy giving MK lots of free kicks in the opening 15 minutes. Yet it was a MK Dons player who was booked 10 minutes in for a bad foul on McAleny as he surged forward.”

“The game was in need of some action as we seemed hung over from Tuesday night as misplaced passes, over hit passes and too much sideways and backwards when in advanced areas. McAleny started to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and a half chance for Udoh who headed high and over. MK offered very little but a moment of madness from the away goalie saw Udoh close down his clearance, the ball went wide his shot was blocked and McAleny rushing in failed to add the finish. McAleny looked our most threatening player”

“Cummings ran down the right but fired over, McAleny again going close then right near half time ex Town loaner Louis Thompson fired a ball in bit it hit the post and ran across the line before Murphy pounced on it. Another former loan player Carlton Morris burst through and Murphy rushed out for a 50/50 at first it looked like the ref pointed to the spot but the linesman said it was a corner.”

“The second half started like the first only note was Goss on for Ramsey and Lang for Cummings, the latter brought the game to life within a minute causing panic at the back for MK Dons, their keeper fumbling a ball and Lang got onto it before Udoh had a crack, the ball was pushed out to Beckles on the edge of the box who smashed it into the net 1-0 to Salop after 62 mins!!”

“Goals give you momentum but for us we went into our shell as MK started bossing the midfield as both Edwards and Laurent lost the ball in vital areas as the visitors searched for an equaliser, a few chances with high and wide shots. Beckles blocking a shot gave it to Laurent who’s heavy pass helped Beckles lose the ball and the right winger smashed the ball towards goal which drew a great save from Murphy but the ball out found Healey who smashes it in for 1-1 on 77 minutes.”

“We pushed forward with half chances for Lang and McAleny, a surging run by Laurent sees his shot caused near calamity by the MK Dons keeper who let Udoh in but his tame shot was saved and McAleny on follow up was saved also. MK Dons looked a threat towards the end as Healey smashed the bar then in injury time another scare as they hit the post. As the whistle blew for full time some sections of the home crowd booed the result.”

“So sadly we are still without a league win in 2020, since our last win at Blackpool we are 8 without a win. The chance of getting into the play offs slips further away and yet more questions about Ricketts tactics. If Town have any real ambition in this league then beating teams that look beatable on paper is a requirement at home especially more so. Some people are starting to call for Ricketts’ head but I don’t think we are quite in that process yet but he must think if he can’t turn around this form then he may get that call from the chairman.”

“My Man of The Match today goes to my favourite Town player Omar Beckles, he scored a goal that any striker would be proud of (must have learned from the other Spice Boy Pierre) he played well and has certainly played his way into playing from the start next time out, a mistake for the equaliser yes but generally solid throughout. McAleny a very close second thought he did very well in a difficult game.”

“So next up we have Accrington at home, possibility of another 3 points on Tuesday night and a chance for a home and away double against Stanley. Keep the faith and I will see you all there.”

“Love & Peace, Corbin”

Thanks to Corbin for his thoughts on the game against MK Dons.

MATCH PREVIEW

Sam Northwood previews today’s home League 1 game against MK Dons.

Town host MK Dons in a crucial League One fixture for Town.

Earlier this season MK beat Town 1-0 with a last minute winner which was undeserved over the whole of the game. Town need to get some momentum in the league and will hope to start here.

MK Dons sit 19th in the league and a win for them would pull them closer to overtaking the Shrews. They are in decent form after winning their last two games.

After a disappointing performance at Anfield on Tuesday, a win here is needed to get confidence back up as questions are being asked about the manager and players. New signing Kayne Ramsey is likely to be involved here after Donald Love has struggled in the last few games. Sam Hart could also feature, meaning wing backs could be played.

Predicted XI’s

Shrewsbury Town:

Lang

MK Dons:

I have supported them ever since they came to Milton Keynes and became the mighty MK Dons.

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts on our away game at Anfield in the Fourth Round Replay of the FA Cup against Liverpool.

“Huge apoligies for lateness of report, had me owd phone stolen walking home last weekend, lesson to Bizzy lad never walk home jolloped. No harm done but using a laptop slower than John Merrick trotting around the quarry with the owd salop shufflers.”

“The big day started with a liquid breakfast in the Brooklands at 10am, the excitment was building already reality was dawning on me that I was going to watch my beloved Salop at Anfield. Whilst in the boozer I was interviewed by Mark Elliott of Radio Salop, we got on our coach driven by legendary Salopian Kelvin Sirrel, with a prostate and a bladder like a chewed orange there was luckily a toilet on board. We stopped in Chester en route, Bizzylad was wooing some mature Llandudno based sproutage with tales of owd nonsense and his legendary Henry Olanga (donga) Jollops were kicking in and we made base in the Abbey boozer near Goodison Park, typical friendly scouse welcome and cheap aleage too, butterflies were kicking in. A walk over the picturesque and iconic Stanley Park we made it too Anfield, it was only my second ever visit to the footballing shrine, the stand on the side dwarfed the rest but the feeling in the ground was utterly electric. The moving rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone almost brought a tear to my japs eye.”

“The match kicked off and sadly thats where the excitment faded a little, we were playing against the youngset team in Liverpool’s history, yes they had some talented players especially Curtis Jones but they were there for the taking. Salop were far too negative for my liking we let Liverpool have far too much of the ball, the biggest miss was Ollie Norbs we need someone who could bully them and out muscle them. We gave them far to much respect, we needed to be nastier, saying that Liverpool had some class players Curtis Jones was a cut above the rest, what a future that lad has also Harvey Elliott and the young nipper Williams were superb, they play in exactly the same style as the first team but it was a shame Mr Klopp wasnt there in person to see it. On the whole Salop sadly underperformed apart from the disallowed goal we hardly threatened, Callum Lang cut a very frustrated figure, some nice runs but didnt get forward enough still think he would be more suited to a more central striking position with a targetman next to him or even Cummings when fully fit. As normal Shaun Whalley ran his socks off and was Salops most threatening player and almost a hero with the goal but to the strict letter of the law it was sadly offside, he like others sadly tired towards the end.”

“My actual Man Of The Match was Dave Edwards, his experience shone and without him our night could have been worse well done owd lad, he would have felt the disappointment more than others being blue and amber through and through. Despite the scoreline and performance it was an experience i will never forget, i actually think maybe the 50,000 plus turnout was a contributory factor into Salop freezing a little. The night had a similar feel to our five previous Wembley visits, gutting but we move on.”

CORBIN’S VIEW FROM THE STANDS

Our young inspirational reporter and massive Shrewsbury Town fan Corbin gives us his thoughts on Tuesday’s FA Cup replay at Anfield against Liverpool.

“Well our dream is over a 1-0 defeat away at Liverpool with the Under 23’s taking centre stage, a real chance of getting through to round 5 to play Chelsea away. The Game was a chance to break some records both at club level and nationally too but in the end we ended up with some unwanted records.”

“Sam Ricketts picked a team different to the weekend defeat to Rochdale with Norburn out injured 2 goal hero from the 2-2 at the Meadow 9 days ago Cummings was on the bench,Pierre was back in at expense of Beckles.”

“Pre match we all sang our hearts out as “You Never Walk Alone” blarred out around the ground, what an amazing thing to experience this place was loud but us Salop fans were louder all 8,000 of us!”

“The game started with Liverpool having lots of the ball without us really closing them down, we held a firm line at the back and little was getting through. Whalley was busy and nearly latched onto a ball over the top, Lang picked up the ball out wide and pushed forward but no end product. Those early exchanges were even but as the half wore on we got deeper and Liverpool came at us down the wings putting in several early crosses that Max dealt with easily.”

“Due to people standing up some kind stewards move me and my Dad to the disabled area from here we could see all the action but we were very close to the home fans whom seemed quiet. Our end was making lots and lots of noise “Salop Salop” rang out and I joined in with all the regular songs.”

“As the half drew to a close Liverpool were winning a lot of fouls for very little challenges, the referee seemed to buy into their play acting on more than one time, the only telling shot was a long ranger that skidded across the surface wide of the post. Game was pretty even at this point we hoped we would see a different Salop team in the second half a team that wanted to win this more than the opponents and our league experience would help us through.”

“The second half started very much like the first Liverpool on front foot, sloppy play from us as we gave away more silly fouls and corners. One player stood out for us our captain for the evening Dave Edwards, his driving runs out of defence, his closing down and trying different passes as well as trying that “Lampard” run into the box he was grabbing the game by scruff of the neck. The oldest man on the field was running the show as many of his team mates struggled to show same intent.”

“Then a 10 minute spell where we showed some grit, a disappointed Lang got applauded off by all us fans for Udoh and within two minutes it looked a genius sub by Ricketts. Golbourne got the ball from Pierre before passing it back to him, Pierre then played in Udoh who spun his marker and ran into the box, his cross was met by a surging Dave Edwards run who poked it towards goal, the keeper saved it but the ball bobbled up and Whalley unmarked headed into the empty net. Oh my days we had scored and we all jumped up and down with looks of disbelief and surprise, full of joy and happiness we were winning 1-0 at Anfield. But our joy turned to fear as VAR had a look at the goal, from our angle at no point did anyone look offside and we all said around us maybe it was a handball or something it took 2 minutes but felt like an age the ref blew with his hand up and no goal was given for offside. LiVARpool had got away with it again as the home fans mocked us all in the away end upsetting and making many of us really angry.”

“We cleared our heads quickly though as Laurent moments later found Udoh on the edge of the box, his turn and swivel was brilliant but he dragged his shot wide. Whalley had a chance assisted by Laurent again but he shot wide. You sensed though that some of the players were deflated by the VAR decision as Liverpool were back passing and running the flanks both full backs beat our wingbacks several times and we got penned in by them as two freekicks and six corners on trot kept us deep but no real threat except a couple of shots over the bar. Max O’Leary was called into action as right back Williams smashed one towards goal but Max saved brilliant with his foot. In this time Cummings was on for Goss could he be our hero again? There was enough time, we were all upbeat for about a minute as a long cross field ball left our keeper stranded as Ro Shaun Williams’ attempted back header bounced into the net. Complete and utter shock we all slumped and our shoulders sunk. Liverpool’s kids had the lead by another own goal from us but 15 mins to go still left us plenty of time.”

“With Dave Edwards pushing forward he got the ball to Laurent, a surging jinking run he found a gap but his shot was high and wide. The 82nd minute was the end of Whalley’s night as Brad Walker came on as Pierre pushed up front. We had a corner but it was cleared well and the ball fell to Love who panicked trying to side step the on rushing attacker suddenly it was four Liverpool players against our keeper with all our players struggling to get back from the corner. It was bound to be 2-0 but a heavy touch and Max came rushing from his goal he was able to clear it.”

“4 minutes of time were added on, 4 minutes for us to get an equaliser and take game to extra time but the way the game had gone we created very little. The Liverpool bench was clever making two subs in injury time to break up the play and then the ref blew for full time. The place erupted, the loudest the home fans had been all night with exception of the own goal as the Liverpool kids run around like they had just won a Cup Final against Barcelona.”

“So that was that our dream was over at 4th round stage for a second season running. 12 months ago we gave Wolves a real fright as we had a 2-1 lead against them but lost 3-2 at Molineux and a brilliant night that was but the end of this Liverpool game had a different feel ,dejected, glum and completely flat. I am sure the inquests will continue for days to come over Ricketts tactics, the way some of the players played and you cant win football games with only a few players performing as it was last night. To lose in the manner that we did against opposition like that was a very hard pill to swallow but we will recover, we will forget and we will be back behind the team next time out!”

“4 players stood out, Whalley,O’Leary, Golbourne and Edwards the last one being my Man of The Match. The oldest member of our team showed glimpses of his old self, worked tirelessly for the team, drove us forward and passed well all night unlucky not to get a goal too. Super Super Dave Super Davey Edwards!”

“The journey home was a long one due to traffic problems and though I was disappointed its another experience and memory to add to many other more memorable memories of my life. If anyone had said you would be watching your team hold Liverpool to a draw at home and then go to Anfield for a replay back in August I would have told you to stop dreaming. But it’s happened, not the ending we all wanted but a big chance for us to showcase our team.“

“Back to league action again, lets hope Sam and the lads can get their spirits up for a crucial League One game at home to MK Dons on Saturday and Accrington at home in a weeks time. Two big games very winnable, 6 points please then we will all feel alot better.”

“Love & Peace, Corbin”

MATCH REVIEW & MAN OF THE MATCH – LIVERPOOL

I made my way down from Glasgow to Liverpool for Salop’s FA Cup Fourth Round Replay, so thought I would give my thoughts on the game.

“So for the first time in the clubs history we got to see Salop run out at Anfield. As I walked up to the stadium I was met by the famous Kop, I’ve attended a game and sat on the Kop before but for some reason it was a great moment as a football fan to take in, maybe it’s a sign of getting older and appreciating things a bit more. I arrived just as the Town players were getting off the team bus and this was show on the big screen in the fan zone, it suddenly felt very real at that point and the buzz began.”

“Due to bad traffic coming into Liverpool kick off was delayed to 8pm, which was good as Crouchy was stuck in said traffic with my ticket. Was a bit of a mare once we got into the ground and too a long time to get from the concourse to our seats, so almost missed kick off.”

“Was amazing to see all the Sweden flags in the crowd and that minutes applause on the 37th minute for Kenneth Lövgren or Swedish Shrew as he was known online. Thank you to all the Salop fans who took part, we sent photos and videos to his family. This showed one of the many reasons why I love this club.”

“Back to the game and the first half was pretty much an even game, we had our chances but didn’t take them. We strongly miss a creative player in midfield to put on chances to our front two. To be honest neither team deserved to go into the break ahead. We needed to change it up at half time and go out on the attack.”

“Second half the game came to life and had a couple of incidents. 20 minutes into the second half and the ball was in the back off the net, Shaun Whalley had scored against the team he had supported since he was a boy, after some good work down the left and the Anfield Road stand erupted. Everyone jumping around, hugging strangers and so happy, but moments later an ominous image appeared on the scoreboard…. VAR possible offside. It felt like an eternity for the outcome of VAR and then the referee pointed towards the centre of the pitch and I thought he had given it, as did Dave Edwards who celebrated but then he signalled for a free-kick to Liverpool and the scoreboard stated “Decision No Goal Offside”. This totally ripped the joy out of the Salop fans as from our angle it didn’t look offside, our first run in with VAR and didn’t go our way. Gutted!”

“There seemed to be a period when there were what felt like 1000 Liverpool corners and we were massively on the back foot, then with quarter of an hour to go we fell behind. Ro-Shaun Williams attempted what looked like an attempt to put the ball out for a corner but instead his header looped over Max O’Leary and into the net. It felt like time went into slow motion as the ball went in, unfortunately you knew that how we had been playing we wouldn’t get back into the game and that’s how the game ended a one nil defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.”

“My Man Of The Match goes to Dave Edwards, looked up for it and tried his best to rally the rest of the team. Can’t fault Dave for his work rate”

“Might not have got the result or the performance we wanted but us 8000 Salopians can say we out sang the famous Liverpool atmosphere and I for one was very happy to have been a part of that. We showed what a great fan base we have and we get behind our team no matter the circumstances. Great night regardless of the result and well worth the trip down from Glasgow to support the team I love.”

MATCH PREVIEW

Sam Northwood previews today’s away FA Cup Fourth Round Replay against Liverpool.

Town will travel to Premier League leaders, European and World Champions Liverpool in the replay in the 4th Round of the FA Cup at Anfield.

In the first game Liverpool went 2-0 up and looked like they had won the game before Jason Cummings scored two, putting himself in Town history books.

Liverpool are top of the Premier League, winning all but one game so far this season which was a draw against Manchester United. It was announced after the first game that Liverpool will controversially be playing their Under 23’s squad this game as the first team are on their winter break, this means Town are favourites with many people to win at Anfield.

After a disappointing defeat on Saturday, Town fans are starting to have doubts over the manager and many don’t believe he is the right man to take the club forward. They need to pick up their league form quickly or the manager will become under serious pressure. Ricketts will hope a win here can squash some of the fans feelings towards him for now. New signing Conor McAleny who impressed on Saturday will be unavailable due to him not being registered for the first fixture.
