WHO ARE YA? LIVERPOOL

Here at “Going Down The Oteley Road” we will be speaking to fans of our opposition throughout the season. Ahead of our FA Cup Fourth Round Replay game away against Liverpool at Anfield, we had another chat with Reds fan Michelle McKenny.

What did you think of the game last Sunday?

What a shocker, gutted we didn’t get the win obviously but just shows the magic of the cup, it keeps it exciting and shows we can’t take anything for granted. Definitely exposed some gaps for us and was a lesson to the younger guys for what could be worked on, we’re not going to have the first team we have forever so these need to step up to be at their level. Disappointing but some good lessons.

Who did you think was the best player for Liverpool?

Adrian, we could easily have went out and he needed to change things up because he wasn’t getting his usual standard of service. He did well for it to be a draw.

Which Shrewsbury player stood out to you?

Cummings without a doubt. Took his goals well and deserves every credit.

What did you think when Jason Cummings sealed the comeback?

Haha I cant repeat what I said but in all honesty I think we weren’t up to scratch and so it was deserved. I actually thought you could clinch it so was relieved when the final whistle went.

What did you think of Jürgen Klopp’s comments post match regarding fielding a weakened side for the replay?

I think he’s caught between a rock and a hard place. He isn’t happy about the amount of fixtures so needs to make some kind of statement on the pitch that his players need a break. It also shows his focus is on the big two for us, but I’d like us to challenge for everything. I don’t think it’s a reflection or understatement of Shrewsbury’s talents just a stand against the fixture thing. But if they’d pulled the finger out and won on the day it wouldn’t even be a discussion.

Do you think Klopp not being at the game will have any impact?

Nah, the non first team players didn’t show up for Klopp last week so it didn’t make a difference him being there so it won’t make one him not being there either.

What do you think the score will be?

Shrewsbury 3 Liverpool 1. The feeling is that it’s almost like it’s a chore for us so I just hope that Shrewsbury don’t embarrass us too much, but if they do it’s our own fault.

Big thanks to Michelle, hope you enjoy the game.

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts on our League 1 away game against Rochdale.

“One of the most frustrating games I’ve been to in a long time, how the hell did we lose that? We utterly dominated for large periods but yet again our downfall was in front of goal, a start for everybodys hero at the moment the Cumdog sadly yielded little, looking at Saturday you can see fitness wise hes still a bit off the pace, lacked a bit of sharpness no doubting the lads quality but need him fully 100 per cent fit. On the other hand Callum Lang was outstanding his workrate was unreal playing out right in a front three, would still like to see him as a more central striker but he was cutting in causing the left back all sorts of problems.”

“She was a lights out missionary position kind of sprout, but never seen anyone dance an owd waltz like her.”

“The midfield partnership of Edwards and Laurent impressed me again, particulary Dave Edwards, his experience is really starting to show through, his higher league intelligence is there for all to see but Man Of The Match goes to Conor McAleny. Can’t believe he’s surplus to Fleetwood’s requirements, a lovely footballer sprayed good passes around and by the sounds of it a bit of a utility player, sound bit of business again. I’m glad we kept all our main players in the transfer window and that includes Omar Beckles came in and did a very decent job against a rank shite Dale outfit.”

“I’ve seen some criticism of Salop’s performance Saturday via social media and must say some of it is very unjust, I’ll slag off the Town when needed but can’t knock them for that. We were bloody all over them for most of the game and were the only side to show any ambition to win, we will win more than we will lose playing like that especially at tough places like Dale. Yes the goals are an obvious problem but I still feel in Cummings we have one of the best strikers we’ve had in years, we just need the owd bugger fully fit.”

“To Liverpool on Tuesday a game I can’t really predict because the opposition is a kind of unknown, but if we can attack like we did in the first game we will cause them a lot of problems. I just hope everyone enjoys the moment it’s rare that we go to such an iconic ground as Anfield, it will be an exciting emotional night.”

CORBIN’S VIEW FROM THE STANDS

Our young inspirational reporter and massive Shrewsbury Town fan Corbin gives us his thoughts on yesterday’s away defeat to Rochdale.

“I didn’t go to Gillingham on Wednesday night but from reading reports we had a poor game, so a quick turnaround for another league game away at Rochdale, a place I am told we haven’t won for 19 years ! Ricketts started with a 3-4-3 Beckles in for Pierre, captaining the side with Laurent alongside him and with new boy McAleny on the left of Cummings and Lang to the right.”

“From the start we were very positive attacking at every chance we had and Conor McAleny inside 10 mins with a jinking run on the left beating his man only to see his shot blocked. A minute later a shot went over the bar from Edwards. Rochdale’s first attempt came on 20 mins with a tame header over but we were bossing the first half and chances came and went, Lang had his shot charged down and then Love fired in across the keeper who palmed it out to safety. We looked good as the half drew to a close, Rochdale had a cross come shot that O’leary dealt with.”

“Second half started like the first with us on top Love with a long ranger blocked then a minute later Love provider for Cummings who’s header was too high. Laurent who was driving forward sized up a shot but the keeper saved smartly, Cummings within the same move lacked the composure as he shot wide and a shot from Lang was again smartly saved by their keeper. We were dominating a team 5 points below us and surely it was only a matter of time if we kept going for the goal we would score, 20 mins to go Lang came off for Whalley and five minutes later Udoh for Cummings. Rochdale’s only response was from the counter attack but they wasted what little chances they had, searching for the winner we piled players forward Whalley header over the bar then Beckles with a shot that went wide. They caught us on the counter attack once more Henderson tried a cheeky attempt from 25 yards and the ball hit the bar, Rochdale reacted quicker looked like their player was offside and we all looked for a flag that wasn’t shown. The shot was blocked but the follow up was smashed in, absolutely gutting we were 1-0 down in the 89th minute. We had huffed and puffed all game to be hit by this knockout blow.”

“The whistle blew and that was that, seeing the starting line up we looked attack minded and it was an exciting idea. Today we wasted our chances putting it simply, another off day but how long can this go on for ?? We are without a league win in 2020 and we last tasted a league win back on December 21st away at Blackpool, the distraction of the cup is still here. Our league form is shocking at the moment relegation form at best 3 points from 21, after the Blackpool win we were all talking about the play offs with being 2 points off them, now we are 13 points off them!”

“My Man of The Match today goes to Omar Beckles, came in for Pierre and did a sterling job cancelled most things out at the back and was solid throughout, bit more composure and he might have grabbed a goal. New signing Conor McAleny gets a mention too, exciting times ahead if he plays regularly.”

“So for now we can forget about the league as we have a replay at Anfield on Tuesday and if Klopp keeps his word it will be the under 23’s we face. A proper second bite of the cherry and a real chance of going to Chelsea in round five. I am going as are many thousands of others enjoy the night. Up The Town, see you all there.”

“Love & Peace, Corbin”

Thanks to Corbin for his thoughts on the game against Rochdale.

WHO ARE YA? ROCHDALE

Here at “Going Down The Oteley Road” we will be speaking to fans of our opposition throughout the season. Ahead of our League One game away at Rochdale, we had a chat with a Dale fan.

What’s your name?

James Singleton.

Where are you from?

Rochdale.

How long have you supported Rochdale?

From birth.

Who is your favourite ever Rochdale player?

Joe Thompson, a true rochdale legend who scored the goal to keep us up. A great survival story and a genuine nice bloke.

Who is your favourite ever Rochdale manager?

Keith Hill, best ever and most successful manager we’ve had.

Who should we watch out for from the current Rochdale team?

Henderson is the obvious one, he can score goals. But for us to perform well our fullbacks have to play well, so Rhys Norrington Davis.

Where do you think you will finish in the league this season?

Just above the drop zone.

What do you know about Shrewsbury?

You had a great result against Liverpool and hopefully it’s had it’s effects on you (want to see you do them over in the replay) I know you’ve won the Welsh Cup a couple of times.

What do you think the score will be?

Would hope to see a 2-1 Dale win.

Big thanks to James, hope you enjoy the game.

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts on our League 1 away game against Gillingham.

“Wheres the gravy mix Mrs Higgins?? Think its somewhere by the gusset. What in the name of satans foreskin is it doing there sprout “

“The cup hangover that I and others predicted duly happened, horrid long journey and in general a shyte away day, I wasn’t as critical as others as I could see it a mile off, mind was definitely on other things. I think the fans are the same too, will be a night to cherish no doubt but I will be kind of glad when its all over. Last nights defeat finally put paid to any lingering play off hopes, hopefully it can be time for Samuel to start experimenting in new formations etc and with the signing of Conor McAleny on loan we can start with two true strikers upfront. Mind you saying that Salop started off quite attacking last night with a front three of Lang, Udoh and Whalley but in reality they failed to trouble the Gills who themselves were a very average mid table outfit. But they were more hungrier and more physical, its the way to go at times just look at Rotherham, the absense of Norbs was a big miss last night. Some are critical of him but theres no one better when it comes to a scrap.”

“Salop were sluggish and slow from the off maybe unsuprising considering they hardly trained pre game, a game we could have done without. Lang cut a very frustrated figure he didn’t look at happy at all and will be pissed off to be brought off again. The usual brilliance of the backline was missing again, very sloppy penalty to give away and O’Learys shaky game left them ill at ease. Laurent again played his bollocks off without being too effective, Salop did look a bit livelier after especially Sam Hart he could be a very decent lad, not afraid to go forward and put a couple of good balls in, will improve with fitness no doubt but he like others faded as the game went on.”

“Ricketts moaning about the “rugby style of football” but this is no excuse he knows the score, he played against Steve Evans sides before so knows whats its about. You don’t go to a place like that on a cowd January night and expect a Brazilian type game, piss poor excuse to be fair, the decision to put Beckles upfront although bizarre and baffling was kind of understandable considering how effective a similar sized Akinde was for Gills. A player exactly the same or of similar ilk would do a job at the Meddah, just got a feeling all our strikers are too similar but the best two are still Cummings and Lang maybe one day soon we can see them form a partnership.”

“A night to forget and we move on, hard to pick a man of the match but just for his contribution to the opening stages of the second half I’ll give it to Sam Hart. Another quick turnaround and to Rochdale Saturday, we need to be far mentally sharper and hopefully Norbs is fit. Will Laurent still be there?? We shall see, would change things again give Cummings and Hart a start both could cause problems. Ro Shaun in for Beckles and maybe rest Whalley, with us not going up or down we could start to relax a little. Rochdale like Gills is a horrid place to play, top days jollop awaits.”

WHO ARE YA? GILLINGHAM

Here at “Going Down The Oteley Road” we will be speaking to fans of our opposition throughout the season. Ahead of our League One game away at Gillingham, we had a chat with a Gills fan.

What’s your name?

Charlene Neeve.

Where are you from?

Rainham, Kent.

How long have you supported Gillingham?

I’m 36, supported the Gills for 31 years.

Who is your favourite ever Gillingham player?

Andy Hessenthaler- great work ethic, even towards the end of his career he could still outrun most of the younger players. Wore his heart on his sleeve. Always had time with the supporters. The players of the Tony Pulis era were a different class.

Who is your favourite ever Gillingham manager?

Martin Allen, leading us to promotion in his first season in charge as League 2 Champions.

Who should we watch out for from the current Gillingham team?

Connor Ogilvie is the stand out player this season, he has even popped up with a few goals from the back. He can play centre back or left back. We have been strong in defence this season and he’s got a good partnership with Max Ehmer. It’s upfront we seem to be struggling getting the ball in the back of the net, although we have just bolstered the attack with Roberts and Akinde so hopefully the chances we are creating can be converted.

Where do you think you will finish in the league this season?

I think we will finish 10th although if we start converting some of the draws to wins we could sneak in to the top 6.

What do you know about Shrewsbury?

We beat you 1-0 in the playoff final in 2009. Shrewsbury are a hard working side, got some grafters, no big name Charlie’s and will give us a good game it won’t be an easy win. We should have signed Jason Cummings when we had the chance. I think he will be wanting to put one over his ex boss Steve Evans.

What do you think the score will be?

I’m going 2-1 we are on an unbeaten run and beginning to make Priestfield a difficult place to come. I’m hoping the Shrewsbury players have one eye on the Anfield replay.

Big thanks to Charlene, hope you enjoy the game.

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts on our monumental draw in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup against Liverpool.

“You know the owd girl don’t ya?? The one with the tattoos of Cannon and Ball on each arse cheek..”

“An utterly magical day from as soon as i got in the Foxes early doors for some sabbath libatory induced frivolity, there was a buzz everywhere you went even non footy fans were taking about it. It’s the day that the European champions were coming to town, 9,500 plus packed into the Meddah, Lineker and his array of punditry ballbags were present, the match was being televised across the world. For the day my little club Shrewsbury Town were headline news in the sporting world, I was utterly filled with pride, as kick off drew nearer the Masonic was utterly packed everyone full of excitement. Could little Salop pull off an almighty shock, to give respect to Klopp he put out a half decent side. Lovren, Matip, Fabinho and Origi starting and some superstars on the bench.”

“I reached the Meddah and the excitement was fever pitch, the 5pm kick-off helped the game as it was played under the lights it added something special to it.”

“A bit of owd stage fright hit Salop early doors, I think the enormity of the occasion got to a couple of the lads, the one lad it didnt though was Dave Edwards brilliant from the lad (he’s either superb or shite, very rarely inbetween) few moaning about him playing but he’s played top flight football and played in the Euros. He’s been there done it and wore the t-shirt, his experience was so valuable but he was overshadowed by one player and that was Josh Laurent, what a bloody shift that was from the lad not sure if its a good thing in a way because hes put himself right in the shop window and maybe he does deserve a move to a Championship club but by god what a huge miss he will be if he goes. Such a busy and intelligent player who will get stuck in when needed and can use the ball too, the best player on the pitch to me run close by Liverpool’s Curtis Jones.”

“The game was turning into a very open encounter chances were starting to appear, Lovren and Matip looking more rocky than Ken and Deirdre Barlows marriage vows.”

“As per normal Salop were excelling themselves against higher opposition and were unlucky to go in half time one down. Owd mons were still nibbling there lukewarm ginsters when disaster struck as Donald Love Truncheon literally passed it into his own net, the ground and atmosphere just died. It looked like curtains for Salop I must admit, Lang who worked his socks off was brought off with a hour gone to the disbelief of himself and some Salop fans (how wrong were we) and Salop’s finest straight from One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest the Cumdog arrived. A bit of a dodgy penalty if I’m honest and Laurent was very clever in making the most of it. Cumdog took the ball off him and slotted home, manic celebrations around me and we could start to believe again. No doubting Salop were the better side at the time, Liverpool looked clueless and didnt seem to know how to change things, then a moment that will live with me forever. Cummings slotted the equaliser in, he was bloody outstanding and we’ve got a real quality lad in here. Utter pandemonium ensued in the lower reaches of the south stand. Not ashamed to admit it I actually shed a tear, grown blokes, women and children all acting like lunatics enveloped by sheer unbridled joy. Try telling fans like us that the magic of the cup is dead, we could have bloody won it in the end. Klopp looking nonplussed on the touchline even bringing on footballing royalty of Salah and Firmino couldn’t bring them a win.”

“The final whistle blew and a stream of euphoric Salopian’s swarmed the pitch, you cant beat a good natured invasion. It’s what football is all about.”

“I tried to do another interview for the Shropshire Star but my jollop riddled mind just wouldn’t work, the reality that my club will be turning out at Anfield had hit me.”

“Well done to Sam, the lads and the club for a wonderful day. A day that will live long in the memories for me, a day where i was bloody proud to be a fan of Shrewsbury Town.”

“Time to dust myself down and prepare for a long journey to Gillingham tomorrow, I will happily take a point now. There’s bound to be tired legs and a slight hangover from Sunday, hopefully not a repeat of the Doncaster game straight after Brizzle Titty though.”

“Sorry for these paragraphs of utterly rambling chin dribbling nonsense.”

CORBIN’S VIEW FROM THE STANDS

Our young inspirational reporter and massive Shrewsbury Town fan Corbin gives us his thoughts on Sunday’s amazing result against Liverpool.

“The day had finally arrived our club “little olde Shrewsbury mixing it with the European and World Club Champions Liverpool, a game on paper where the odds were stacked against us before a ball was kicked but its 11 v 11 and on the day could the Magic of The FA Cup spring a surprise??”

“As we made our way to the ground I said I fancy a 2-1 win, my Dad more cautiously said a draw maybe 1-1 or 2-2 if we could score. Outside the ground I had my picture took alongside the Liverpool team coach and we entered the ground at 4:25pm, the noise was already there as fans singing Salop Salop during the warm ups. That is almost unheard of!”

“I saw all the Liverpool players warming up close by an advantage of being in Block 18, saw Jurgen Klopp hands in pockets watching both teams train. Rumour before the game was Liverpool would field a weakened team but their line up still had some first teamers and internationals, Matip and Lovren at the back, Adrian in goal, also Fabiniho and Origi with Mo Salah, Frimino, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Arnold on the bench.”

“Shrews went with O’Leary in goal, Whalley and Lang lead the attack with Josh Laurent. We shaped up 3-4-3 with Love and Golbourne as wing backs, the back three picks itself and Captain Norburn alongside Goss. By kick off time the ground was bursting full and the noise levels increased.”

“Liverpool pushed us back and during the first 15 minutes they were very dominate and they took the lead, their hero from round three Jones burst through our lines before beating O’Leary for m 1-0 to Liverpool. We didn’t feel sorry for ourselves or let our heads drop and we started to take the game to Liverpool, Josh Laurent with his closing down which spread amongst the team as our cofidence was growing. Then Whalley beat the offside trap to go one on one with the keeper, only for Adrian to save with his legs. Norburn went off injured to be replaced by Dave Edwards and it didn’t seem to faze us as Liverpool sat on there lead without causing us any problems as the half wore on. Whalley went through again with a through ball from the impressive Lang only to drag his shot wide, then Pierre’s chance was saved by Adrian. The ref blew his whistle for half time and we all cheered the players off, we had played well despite losing 1-0.”

“Second half started and barely 30 seconds into it with many fans still taking their seats a cross from the right by Liverpool and Donald Love passed the ball into his own net under little pressure, disaster!! 2-0 down and the atmosphere dropped with many stunned by the own goal and so quickly after the restart but we saw our players beefing everyone up. Most players who score own goals in big games hold their heads in shame, Love didn’t he just got on with it and that shows the professional attitude Ricketts has put into these players. Once again there was a slight lull in the ground as we all grew concerned but the fans started singing louder and louder, the 12th man.Come on Shrews make us proud if we got a goal then you never know. Josh Laurent was grabbing the game by scruff of the neck, closing down balls, winning tackles and lung bursting runs as he looked mostly likely to score. He got a chance on 52 mins only to drag his shot wide, then Golbourne with a cross field switch to Lang who beat the offside trap from the right bearing down on Adrian but his goal bound shot was tipped around the post for a corner. From the corner Ebanks Landell screwed his shot wide.”

“Lang was replaced by Cummings and some fans booed thinking its a one off game we are 2-0 down, an extra attacker might have helped to get us a goal. Laurent closing down again caused chaos but he shot wide, but 5 minutes later from a lung bursting run Laurent was fouled it looked like it was in the box and after a little delay the ref pointed to the spot. Cummings put the ball down and sent the keeper the wrong way. The ground erupted we had scored!! We were back in it, belief grew in the team and the fans ,could we win? Could we do another Stoke against the might of Liverpool??”

“Klopp called for one of his stars Oxlade-Chamberlain was on and within 2 minutes his shot was charged down. Just a minute later Origi smashed it towards goal only for Max to claw it out and jump on the rebound, his kick down field towards Whalley was picked up by Cummings. His run forward against two Liverpool defenders got him through into the box and he slotted it into the near post. The place erupted with cheering, crying, screaming and carnage around the ground as everyone celebrated the equaliser.”

“Klopp sent on Mo Salah for Matip, he seriously wanted to win this. Moments later Origi smashed one in the side netting, Firmino came on with 5 minutes to go and Udoh replaced Whalley. Liverpool went in search for a winner as Frimino found some space but O’Leary saved from the angle and the loose ball was briliantly blocked by Ro Shaun to deny Jones a second and probably the winner. Then we pushed forward ourselves Love got to the byline and crossed, the ball bounced up hitting Fabinho on the arm. It had to be a second penalty but despite our players protests the referee waved away the claim, would VAR have given it? As we entered the last few minutes the game was starting to stretch and a Firmino crossed for Salah to flick wide with a header, Josh Laurent ran down the right and looked up trying to smash in at the near post forcing Adrian to save it for a corner.”

“Liverpool pressed again but couldn’t find a winner and the final whistle blew to a massive cheer from the home fans, its rare for that to happen after a draw but the way in which it happened who can blame us. There was a pitch invasion as very happy fans ran to our heroes, We had done it! A cup upset of sorts to be 2-0 down at home to the mighty Liverpool, to finish the game with Salah and Frimino on the pitch and get a 2-2 draw is what dreams are made of. My Dad says Its memories like this that will last a lifetime, I am sure I will never ever forget this game!!”

“I went home dreaming of going to the replay at Anfield and listening on the radio that Klopp is going to field a team of kids in the replay due to the Premier League winter break. Tonight was probably our best chance to beat them and we deserved to win so so proud of my team but with the news about the replay maybe we have a better chance, either way we will go and give it another go in a money spinning replay and a real chance of getting into the 5th Round. The magic of The FA Cup has come to Shrewsbury!!”

“My Man Of The Match was a difficult choice, so many candidates the whole team deserves it even Sam Ricketts for his decision making so. I am for first time giving it to two players Josh Laurent he just gets better and better and could have scored, lets hope he is still here on February 1st as we need him firing for rest of season and my other is Jason “Super Sub” Cummings, 5 minutes after coming on scores penalty 10 mins later makes it 2-2. He was a nuisiance to Liverpools back line and had the handball been given for a penalty he would have likely scored a 25 min hat trick.”

“Next up for the Town is Gillingham away in the league on Wednesday (too far for a school night, I won’t be there!) then on Saturday another away trip to Rochdale, see you all there.”

“Love & Peace, Corbin”

Thanks to Corbin for his thoughts on the game against Liverpool.
