WHO ARE YA? LIVERPOOL

Here at “Going Down The Oteley Road” we will be speaking to fans of our opposition throughout the season. Ahead of our FA Cup Fourth Round game at home against Liverpool, we had a chat with a Reds fan.

What’s your name?

Michelle McKenny.

Where are you from?

I’m from a little corner of Liverpool called Huyton – hometown of Stevie G himself and like him I also now live in sunny Scotland but I moved here first so clearly he’s copying me.

How long have you supported Liverpool?

I’ve supported Liverpool all my life really but my earliest memories are watching the games in my nans and being mesmerised (mostly because on the wind up my uncle told me that if they lost it was because I was putting them off by talking) so I watched in stunned silence – but given it was 80s LFC it turned out it wasn’t too bad an experience. That turned into watching them train at Melwood, hunting autographs, going to games and then landing a job at Anfield! So getting paid in Liverpool shirts as a fan was pretty amazing.

Who is your favourite ever Liverpool player?

This is so difficult as there’s too many to choose from like Souness and Hansen. There’s something about a player that wasn’t scared to put the boot in (when it was more acceptable) and both of them were such good leaders. And then there’s Kenny who speaks for himself. But I’ll ALWAYS be a diehard Robbie Fowler fan. There was just something about him that made him simultaneously the hardest working person on the pitch, looking to make those runs and his physicality making him seem knackered – then he could just turn it on and put such an effortless finish on a ball and scored some cracking goals. I’ll always remember that hat trick against Arsenal that was the quickest until Mane broke the record at Southampton (but then he came to us so I can’t really begrudge him stealing Robbies record). Fowler always looked like he was enjoying himself as well. I preferred him a million percent to Owen. Helps that he was a hometown boy as well that turned from the dark side to wear a red shirt haha. Cried my eyes out the day he left. Then when he came back. Then when he left again.

Who is your favourite ever Liverpool manager?

King Kenny. We’ve been lucky with most of our managers to be honest but hands down (and probably out of sentimentality) King Kenny was was just something else. Both times. He just loves the club and it shows. The way he carried himself and the club during our worst time will always stay with me – he was so dignified. He always had his players backs as well. Ultimately that was his undoing second time around because you can only back Suarez so much – but there’s just something about that level of loyalty that’s appealing. And he always just naturally commanded respect – didn’t need to shout the odds. Passionate but reserved at the same time. It’s a hard balance but he managed it. Love seeing him at games these days cheering them on – he knows that feeling this squad is creating. It’s just so nostalgic – watching this Liverpool team is reminiscent of Kennys player/manager days.

Who should we watch out for from the current Liverpool team?

There’s too many haha – wee Trent, Ox – even Harvey Elliott is making a mark- they are all absolutely superstars of the future. Milner is a machine at the minute and Virgil is just – well he is football perfection. But Andy Robertson is totally unstoppable just now – can’t take your eyes off him in a game. Really humble and willing to learn from Van Dijk but immensely talented in his own right and shouldn’t be overshadowed or overlooked. The guy would run all day given the chance. Again looks like he’s having the time of his life and enjoys every minute he’s in that red shirt. Definitely a future captain – he reminds me of Hansen sometimes.

Where do you think you will finish in the league this season?

Haha I’m not going to say it. Ask me again in May (or maybe April/late March).

What do you know about Shrewsbury?

I don’t really know a lot about Shrewsbury to be honest. I’m very much a club fan rather than a general football fan these days so I’m guilty of overlooking teams we don’t play regularly (sorry!) but I do know Willie Weir played for them (husband went to school with his son). I’m definitely looking forward to this tie though. I’m nervous as a Liverpool fan because when you’re on a run you’re always waiting for the wheels to come off. And cup games are always a different breed – anything can happen. I just hope Klopp doesn’t field a side that underestimates Shrewsbury – although he didn’t have a choice but to field kids in the Carabao cup, fielding the young ones still backfired and we can’t risk that again. And even if you’re chasing the league/Champions League, you should still try and win all your games. I think Shrewsbury will be up for it – I hope to see some of the Shrewsbury players holding their own against the visiting EPL “stars” – it helps keep egos grounded and shows everyone else that there’s more to football than the Premier League. It definitely is the magic of the cup and again anything can happen. I just hope it’s a good game.

What do you think the score will be?

3-1 to us. On paper we’re the favourites and depending on who plays you’d expect the usual suspects to bang some goals in. But being a Liverpool fan, I know all too well we can make mistakes and I think there’ll be a few occasions where we let our guard down and Shrewsbury will capitalise. Plus they’re the home team and you should never underestimate the power of the 12th man – we’ve relied on them often enough!

Big thanks to Michelle, hope you enjoy the game.

FA CUP FAN OF THE WEEK

This weeks fan of the week is a FA Cup special and a family affair as we have Salop fan Michael Gregg and his Liverpool supporting Aunt Sarah Schofield.

How long have you supported your team?

Michael – I have supported Salop since I was 9 years old and my Dad started taking me to the games and then I got the bug!

Sarah – I have supported Liverpool since Michael’s Dad, (my Brother in Law) took me to see a night match at Anfield when I was 8. That was 40 years ago but I was hooked from then on.

How has the tension between you both been ahead of today’s game?

MG – Tension, has had more of a fun feel to it and an exciting game for both sides. I think I’m a little more excited about it though!

SC – The tension is all good fun and light hearted. I proper love it, makes it all the more exciting.

What was your reaction when you found out the two teams would be playing each other?

MG – The reaction was great, I was sat watching BBC’s live draw with my Dad and I remember jumping up shouting “we have got Liverpool at home!!” I would have loved a trip to Anfield in the away end but I can’t complain.

SC – I saw the draw and text Michael straight away. I was just praying they beat Bristol in the replay and Salop did not disappoint. Game on!

If your teams on the losing end, how much stick are you expecting?

MG – I think it’s a free hit from my point of view, if we lose as expected then I’ll just put my hands up and accept it, if we somehow win then I can use that for banter for the rest of my life! I already do it with my friends who support Everton after Nigel Jemson’s masterclass knocked them out!

SG – I will not hear the last of it if we lose, Michael will let me have it from all angles – texts, emails, FB posts – it’s all good banter though. The only advantage of a Salop win is the fact that Everton fans will be fuming – they couldn’t beat LFC young guns but Shrewsbury could!

Who is your favourite current player?

MG – Favourite player is Shaun Whalley because he can do things that most can’t and on his day he is the best winger in the league, I think he has truly become a Salop legend! It’s such a shame he is coming to the end of his career.

SC – Big Virgil Van Dijk. I just think he has had a massive impact on the whole team since joining the Reds. He’s so cool and calm and he commands the back four. I used to feel nervous when other teams attacked but now with big Virg there I am filled with confidence.

Who do you think will be the biggest threat in your team today?

MG – Biggest threat for Salop today could be Whalley but I think the centre backs need to be at their best if we are to stand any chance so I’m hoping for Ebanks Landell to rise to the occasion!

SC – As Jurgen will probably play the kids again (and why not) I have got to go for our scouser in the team, Curtis Jones. Let’s hope he repeats that magnificent goal that he scored against Everton in the last round. What a beauty that was!

How do you feel ahead of today’s game?

MG – I’m pretty relaxed about the game as it’s a free hit and we have already done well in the cup. I really hope we can take these type of performances and mentalities into the league more regularly however and become more consistent.

SC – I feel good, we are a great team to watch at the moment. I feel a little bit nervous too, it wouldn’t be right if there were no nerves, especially as there is so much family bragging rights at stake!

Do you remember much about the last time Shrewsbury played Liverpool in the FA Cup in 1996?

MG – I don’t remember that game as I was only 4 years old, but I’ve seen and heard plenty of special memories about it from the Gay Meadow.

SC – Well I would like to say I was too young to remember like Michael but I would be lying. The Reds won 4-0 at Gay Meadow, Shrewsbury were outclassed that day.

What are you most worried about in the opposition?

MG – I think I’m most worried about being embarrassed by the kids, I’m just glad Everton couldn’t beat them so even if it goes horribly wrong they don’t have the right to banter me about it!

SC – Michael is always going on about Shaun Whalley, he could be our biggest threat I think.

What do you think the score will be today?

MG – I’m going to have to go for a famous 1-0 Salop win! Ethan Ebanks Landell to nod in a header from a Shaun Whalley corner!

SC – I think you will score but we will win. I think it will be Shrewsbury 1 – Liverpool 3.

LOOKING BACK WITH ADAM RODGERS…

Long time Town fan and a man who knows a lot about his Salop history, Adam Rodgers gives his view on tomorrow’s FA Cup him tie against Liverpool.

A Foot In Both Camps

I think the FA Cup draw programmes (particularly the third and fourth rounds) are unique in that they provide some of sports highest levels of excitement without actually showing any sport. In fact you could argue that the draw is often more exciting than the matches themselves.

I sat down a couple of weeks ago to watch the draw, brew in hand, with the usual excitement looking out for the ball numbers of Shrewsbury Town and my other love, Liverpool. Hopefully Town would draw one of the big boys and Liverpool would get a nice winnable home tie to allow the squad players and young stars to progress and hopefully win a first FA Cup in 14 years.

Those who know me will know I’m a lifelong Liverpool fan, ever since I was seduced by John Barnes’s twinkle toes and the swaying allure of the Kop some thirty years ago. A year or so later my Dad took me to my first Town match and again I was hooked, that was it, I was forever to have two teams. A wife and a mistress (not sure which way round!) to thrill me and disappoint me in equal measure for many years to come. It won’t be a problem I thought, they’ll probably never meet. They did meet of course a few years later in 1996 and it was a horrible experience for me, Liverpool running out 4-0 winners in a pretty uninspiring game.

I watched the draw in horror as Alex Scott and David O’Leary refused to pick out ball numbers 12 and 13 until last and my worst case scenario had come true. Well, ‘Bristol City will probably beat us in the replay anyway’ I thought. Wrong! Aaron Pierre pinged in a late left foot worldy and my nightmare tie was set up. I was already dreading the mad scramble for tickets and explaining to my five year old son that it’s not the done thing to sit at a football match and cheer for both teams! Why couldn’t we have drawn Arsenal or Spurs so I could get fully behind the excitement and hope for a FA Cup giantkilling?! I never want my beloved Shrewsbury to lose a game but I certainly don’t want Liverpool to be dumped out of the cup by lower league opposition either! I’ll just watch trying to be a neutral and see what happens. Would be good to see a draw and give Town fans chance to experience Anfield in a replay.

As it turned out there was no mad scramble for tickets. Despite having 10+ loyalty points the ticketing system would only allow me to get 1 ticket for myself, NOT a ticket for my young son. He doesn’t have a fan card, because fan cards for under 12’s don’t exist. I can’t go to the game on my own leaving my boy at home so we’ll be watching the game on TV despite being present at every home game this season. How Brian Caldwell can call this fair and a system everyone is happy with is beyond me! The European and World champions are in town and any child that doesn’t have a season ticket won’t be there. Huge shame.

I just hope it’s a good game on Sunday and everyone who’s lucky enough to be there enjoys it, the Town lads do themselves proud. Mr Klopp is welcome to join me for a pint of German lager afterwards!

MATCH PREVIEW

Sam Northwood previews tomorrow’s home FA Cup Fourth Round game against Liverpool.

Town will host Premier League leaders, European and World Champions Liverpool in the 4th Round of the FA Cup.

Last time the two clubs met was also in the FA Cup which was in 1996, Liverpool won 4-0. This time round Town will hope for something to celebrate.

Liverpool are top of the Premier League, winning all but one game so far this season which was a draw against Manchester United. They are also in the Champions League last 16 so they’ll look to rotate their squad here. Jürgen Klopp hinted that some big names will be playing as some will be coming back after injuries to get match fit.

After a decent draw at Fleetwood on Saturday, Town will be full of confidence coming into this and will look to apply pressure to Liverpool from the off. New signings Sam Hart and Josh Vela could feature at some point.

CHATTING TO AN EX SALOPIAN…KRIS BRIGHT

We’ve been lucky enough at “Going Down The Oteley Road” to speak to some ex Shrewsbury Town players, this week Daz Carding spoke with ex striker Kiwi Kris Bright.

How did it feel making your debut for Shrewsbury Town?

It was slightly delayed because of the international clearance, so I spent those couple of weeks of the season watching Dave Hibbert and Jake Robinson banging them in! It was hard to wait my turn but I had always wanted to play in English football and it was great to finally get my chance.

What was the highlight of your time in Shropshire?

It obviously didn’t go the way I had wanted it to on the pitch, so my highlight was being part of a good group of lads. I enjoyed going in to training each day and being part of the squad but highlights were few and far between on the pitch.

You played under Paul Simpson at Shrewsbury, how was that experience?

I enjoyed my time playing for Paul. It was tough for him at the end of the season when he left as we had been in and around the playoff spots all year, then we had a bad month of results. He gave me my chance in English football and I will forever be grateful of that.

You scored a few goals for Town, do any stick out?

Port Vale away was great with it being a local derby and it was my first time starting for a while. I think we drew 1-1 but I finished the season quite well. It was a left footer just outside the box after I kept creeping forward and no one closed me down.

Who was the best player you played with in Blue and Amber?

Technically it was Steven Leslie and Lewis Neal. Both were always fantastic in training. Overall, especially at the time it was Jake Robinson. He could score from nothing and was a great finisher.

Who was the best player you came up against for Shrewsbury?

I remember playing against Ipswich in the League Cup and after the game, Graham Coughlan said to the boys that Connor Wickham (who was about 16 and was unreal that day) would play in the Premier League which he did. Toughest defender, if I had to pick one then Id have to say fellow New Zealander Tommy Smith then as he played in the same game!

What made you decide to be a striker?

I was always really small and fast, so when I was younger I scored buckets of goals running round kids in New Zealand. I got the taste for goals and have been up there ever since.

Who was the biggest influence on your career?

My Dad. He didn’t get involved huge amounts or push me too hard, but it was just the right amount for me to stay hungry. He would keep me humble when things were going well and give me a boost when I was going through tough patches. He played at the World Cup for New Zealand, I had and still have huge respect for him and his career.

Who was the biggest joker in the changing room at Shrewsbury?

Kevin McIntrye was always up to something. I never saw that guy sit still, always having a laugh at something.

Do you still keep an eye on Shrewsbury Town?

I live in NZ now, so we barely get the chance to watch the Premier League on TV over here as 3pm means 3am here! I always follow Shrewsbury’s results but Im not quite keen enough to get up in the early hours and find a link to watch the matches!

Where do you think Shrewsbury will finish this season in League One?

Hopefully they stay in League One and consolidate to then push in the near future for the Championship. Its a pretty big jump so hopefully the club as a whole is ready for the time when they push for the higher end of the table.

What football team do you support?

Man Utd. Its not easy at the moment though!

Who was your favourite player as a child?

Ryan Giggs. Crazy as it sounds but I played just like him! Nowadays not as much!! He was always so exciting on the ball and he was my favourite Utd player.

Why do you love football?

The emotion and passion that comes from it. I enjoyed training from a young age and playing games was the highlight of my week, it still is. Now my young son who just turned 1 is walking around kicking a ball as well, so it seems to have been passed down, as it was from my old man to me.

Huge thanks to Kris for chatting with us about his time at Shrewsbury and for bringing back some great memories from years gone by.

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts on our League 1 away game against Fleetwood Town.

“Have a go Flo, your sisters feeling low, she kicked a christmas pudding and nearly broke her toe.”

“Cracking days banter, owd jollops and banter. Thanks to me mucker Gopher driving us up and to Mallet for the jollops not forgetting Mr Pryce for the owd nonsense. Got ourselves into the cracking “Jims Bar” at the ground where it was 2 quid a jollop it lubricated the owd red lane like a pint of duckhams on a warm morning. I was greeted by a steward who shook my hand and still remembered my name from last season haha, once a ballbag always a ballbag i suppose.”

“No point covering it up but a lot of league fixtures have been turgid affairs entertainment wise but Saturday was an exception, I thought it was a decent game and was utterly gutted we didn’t take all the points but will settle for that, can say now any lingering play off ambitions have evaporated.”

“Fleetwood are a bloody good side and despite being small in stature have a wage budget probably larger than Salops. Our defence havent been tested like that for a bit, the physical presence of Madden and Evans troubled the normally flawless EEL and Pierre a bit, the pick of the backine was Ro Shaun Williams and the very energetic Donald Love, great to see Love getting forward again and putting in some good crosses again and defending well too. The Love of old (i don’t mean my attraction to senior aged sprouts either) it was well done mon.”

“From minute one Norbs meant business, absolute tireless quality display from the lad, rolled his sleeves up and meant business. He wasn’t too shabby with the owd pork bladder either used it well setting up a couple of attacks. Assured displays from Laurent and Edwards too, although Davey slowed after his knock and was took off, if Edwards plays he’s better off playing in an advanced role just behind the front two as he’s far more effective there than just mopping up further back.”

“Lang had another outstanding display not only does he look dangerous but his workrate is second to none too, as said before the lad can and will play at a higher level just thankful to Wigan for loaning him. Not sure where you play him but surely you’ve got to find room for Cummings to start, he did more in 20 munutes than the likes of Fey have done all season, brilliant player on his day and very clever too as he gets in the right positions and knew as soon as he had the ball it was in. Could we sacrifice a back man so we play Cummings and Lang together?? With gametime i feel they could become a top partnership, i feel Sam thinks differently though.”

“And to Man Of The Match Shaun Whalley, shite one week, brilliant the next he was everywhere today, Fleetwood’s footballing style suited him and Salop’s play in general seemed more happier today and the support of Edwards today helped him a lot. Proper 100% effort and hit the bar with an owd belter too.”

“Disappointed not to win and with maybe a bit more adventure we could have won, but a bloody good point against a good side so can’t be unhappy at that.”

“The night finished off with a trip to the Meddah for my mukkas Kinny and Di’s wedding doo, danced like a twat with my scarf still round my neck.”

“The countdown is on to Sunday where Salop will play the owd scallys in-front of a global TV audience of millions, for 2 hours we will be in the forefront of the footballing world. Whatever side Liverpool put out it will be a special special day and one you should treasure and enjoy forever, thankyou Sam and the boys for some utterly wonderful cup memories. As owd Barrymore used to say ‘don’t let the bugger bite you’”

CORBIN’S VIEW FROM THE STANDS

Our young inspirational reporter and massive Shrewsbury Town fan Corbin gives us his thoughts on yesterday’s draw with Fleetwood Town.

“Back to league action after our cup heroics with a trip to Fleetwood, a place we have struggled to get positive results in the past. Shrewsbury started with a 3-4-3 formation of sorts with Max O’Leary back in goal, Edwards, Golbourne and Love back as the width came from Whalley and Lang and the back three picks itself.”

“Though my Dad had bought seating tickets I wanted to stand with the singing fans, as I love to sing. The game started with Fleetwood being the more dominate side with two quick corners that nearly undone us but with bodies on the line and a superb save by Max it kept the score at 0-0. Then we had a break with Aaron Pierre 30 yards out we were all shouting shoot but his shot went wayward. Fleetwood kept coming at us as we were sloppy in play, a header from a free kick narrowly wide just 5 mins before half time.”

“Dave Edwards’ closed down a clearance Lang got the loose ball and smashed it towards the goal the keeper who saved it but the rebound fell at the feet of Whalley who poked it home to make it 1-0 to Salop, against the run of play but we didn’t care as we celebrated in the away end.”

The second half began and Fleetwood started like the first half but more intent, Beckles was a half time sub for Golbourne. Fleetwood quickly equalised through some neat one touch football which saw their right back run right into the box and smash it in to make it 1-1. Then straight up the other end with some good build up from us and Lang tried a cheeky chip over the keeper but the ball bounced inches wide.”

“The game was starting to be end to end, both Norburn and Lang had shots blocked. Laurent was bossing the midfield again with his tackling and surging runs, when he is on form he is by far our best midfielder. Ricketts made further changes with Udoh on for Edwards and gave us fans what we wanted two up front then with 20 plus minutes to go Cummings on for Lang. Within 10 minutes Cummings had a shot blocked but just a minute later he wasn’t going to be denied, Whalley picked out a lovely pass to Cummings on edge of the box a couple of touches and he smashed it into the corner. 2-1 to Salop with 10 mins to go, absolute mad scenes in the away end as Danny,my Dad and others rushed to the front to celebrate with the group of players who had rushed to us fans to celebrate his goal. Was it the winner??”

“It felt like we had a great chance especially with our mean defence but with just a few minutes left Fleetwood did get an equaliser, one touch football took Morris into the box and he smashed it into middle of goal for 2-2 as the ball looked like it took a deflection. Four minutes of time was added on and very little was created from either team and the game ended 2-2.”

“Before the game we would have taken a point afterwards we felt a draw was two points dropped. Despite spending spells on the back foot I thought it was one of our better away performances but the draw means we have still no league win in 2020, a run that hasn’t seen a League win since Blackpool away in December.”

“My Man Of The Match was Laurent, yet again he put in a dominate performance the more he plays the more he improves. He didn’t get a goal today but played with so much drive it was like he was trying to prove he is unplayable, a brilliant performance again!”

“So thats it the League is put to one side again as we all know by now next Sunday the 26th January we have a FA Cup tie against Liverpool, all the team can focus on is that and us fans are counting down the days until then. Will Mr Klopp respect us and play some of his international talent or decide that the kids deserve another crack after beating Everton in round 3? Which ever it is the game is hopefully a memorable one, I will be there as ever.”

“Love & Peace, Corbin”

Thanks to Corbin for his thoughts on the game against Fleetwood Town.
