CORBIN’S VIEW FROM THE STANDS

Our young inspirational reporter and massive Shrewsbury Town fan Corbin is back on the road again and he gave us his thoughts on our away League One game against Portsmouth.

“Well after the disappointment of the Morecambe game on Saturday, we were at it again with a last minute decision to go to Pompey for a Tuesday night game. I was excited because we do seem to be at our best against the more fancied teams last seasons wins at Hull, Lincoln and Doncaster, home wins against Sunderland and Peterborough. So despite our 0 goals and 0 points from two league games this season, I had a feeling tonight could be special.”

“Steve Cotterill mixed up the team again, we started 4-4-2 or 4-3-2-1 Bennett in the middle with Vela, out wide Bloxham and Leahy, Pennington and Pierre centre back, Daniels at right back and Nurse at left back. Cosgrove up top with Udoh dropped to the bench, Ogbeta Davis, Pyke and two goalkeepers named on bench showing our fragile squad.”

“The teams came out to a massive roar from both the 14,000 home fans as 250 of us tried to compete, the noise was deafening. Shrewsbury wearing their new pink and black away kit and in bright in the middle the nightmare referee Mr Trevor Kettle.”

“The game started with Portsmouth on the front foot, two early soft fouls conceded by Town did nothing to encourage our fans to think Mr Kettle was going to be fair. Any master plan Cotterill and his team had went out the window within 120 seconds! Yes 120 seconds or two minutes, Vela’s half clearance on the edge of the box fell nicely to Harkness who squared it to a Pompey player in space and his smash via a slight deflection took it past Maroši in goal. The ground erupted as Portsmouth had the perfect start, it was on the PA Ryan Tunnicliffe, Man United reject had scored as the Pompey fans sang “we are top of the league.” Many Salop fans around us were stunned but not surprised as our defending was sloppy and it was criminal to give any player so much space in the box let alone a player in a team with 6 points from 6. We were so worried this might be another Peterborough from last season and we would concede 5 or 6 goals as Pompey buoyed by the goal and the home crowd roaring them forward tore through our defence time after time. We stood tall with some better defending than for the goal and some poor finishing kept the score at 1-0, we started to grow into the game.”

“However on 30 minutes it was nearly 2-0, another set piece we couldn’t defend but for a Pennington block and a slice wide by Pompey’s forward it would have been a second for the home team. Bloxham who had been decent for Town found a way through to goal but his shot went wide as the linesman put his flag up. A blatant dive from Marquis to try and win a penalty went unpunished by the referee, he had earlier elbowed Bloxham and got away with it. Trevor Kettle had struck again, fouls by Pompey players on our lads passed him by and it felt like he was giving Portsmouth all the decisions.”

“Half time and we still had hope, we were playing better but it seemed to be in pieces rather than constant.”

“In the second half we came out brighter, Cosgrove running through the middle played it wide to Leahy who stumbled but forced the keeper into a smart save. Vela from the edge of the box hit one sweet but it was straight at the keeper. Portsmouth fans sang and sang “We are Pompey” trying to get their team upfield but apart from a free-kick the home team didn’t do much in the second half as it was Salop trying to equalise. Which seemed more likely as Bloxham made way for Pyke and Ogbeta came on for Daniels, straight away we looked better.”

“The game got delayed for a head clash both Pennington and a home team player needed head bandages and replacement shirts. We were pushing forward more and more as the game entered the last 10 minutes and suddenly we looked more of a threat and it was exciting to see if only we could take a chance in the box. Our decisions in the final third cost us against Burton and we were doing the same here. Pierre from a set piece headed towards goal and it was brilliantly saved by the Pompey keeper as the fourth official said 8 minutes of time added on. We won a succession of corners and had forced Pompey back, you’d have thought in added time we were the team on top as the home side hanged on. 8 minutes of time added on became 10 minutes as the usual antics of play acting from a team winning 1-0 started but to Mr Kettle’s credit he wasn’t having any of it and duely added on the time.”

“The final whistle blew and despite a 1-0 loss it felt like we missed a trick, had we scored things and feelings would have been so better but the fact is we lost to a team who were top at start of play. We cant rest on our laurels or allow this to effect us as the games come thick and fast as Saturday we are at home to Plymouth. Tonight we played better than we had in the previous two games but to play like that and leave with nothing shows how light we are in depth, to name two goalies on the bench again shows that but even with those missing through injury we are still well short.”

“Steve Cotterill has promised new signings but he is waiting on other clubs, it looks like loan deals are going to make or break us this season. I’m not overly concerned yet that we are 24th in the league. We go again on Saturday against Plymouth.”

“My Man Of The Match tonight was going to be Bloxham for his tireless work out wide and he did a brilliant job and felt disappointed that Pyke replaced him, so my Man Of The Match is Bennett at times the game drifted from him but he played assured in a midfield role he probably isn’t that used to.”

“Love and Peace, Corbin”

Thanks to Corbin for his thoughts on the game against Portsmouth.

WHO ARE YA? Portsmouth

Here at “Going Down The Oteley Road” we will be speaking to fans of our opposition throughout the season. Ahead of our long trip for our away game against Portsmouth, we had a chat with a Pompey fan.

What’s your name?

Charlie Pittock

Where are you from?

Thanet, Kent

How long have you supported Portsmouth?

My entire life – grand total of 23 years.

Who is your favourite ever Pompey player?

So many different players – Gary O’Neil and Yakubu I loved as a young boy, Lassana Diarra is one of the greatest players I’ve ever seen with a ball at his feet. In more recent years it’s probably Christian Burgess and Jamal Lowe, Burgey for everything he did off the pitch, and Jamal for being a constant threat and the sort of player that gets you off your feet.

Who is your favourite ever Portsmouth manager?

Given my age, it’s got to be Harry Redknapp. I doubt I’ll ever see my club win the FA Cup ever again, and took us into Europe (before Spurs came calling anyway!).

Who should we watch out for from the current Portsmouth team?

Ryan Tunnicliffe – started the season on fire and seems to have won over the entire fanbase almost instantly. Obviously Ronan Curtis is always a threat, are are John Marquis and Marcus Harness.

Where do you think you will finish in the league this season?

I really can’t predict it! I’d hoped for a top-10 with so many good teams in the division this year, but we’ve started well and seem to be playing good football. I’ll optimistically say we’ll sneak a play-off place.

What do you know about Shrewsbury Town?

Brilliant club with a really loyal supporter base. I’ve got a lot of time for Steve Cotterill given his spell in charge here when things weren’t going wonderfully off the pitch. I was at The Valley for the 2017/18 playoff match too (I went to uni in London), and still vividly remember that half-volley in front of the home fans in the first leg – what a strike!

What do you think the score will be?

1-0 Pompey, Marquis with the goal.

Big thanks to Charlie, for answering our questions.

MATCH PREVIEW

Sam Northwood previews tonight’s League 1 away game against Portsmouth.

Venue: Fratton Park

Kick off: 1945

Head to Head: Played 24, 10 Shrewsbury Town wins, 4 draws, 15 Portsmouth wins

Town will make the long trip to Portsmouth hoping to kickstart their season.

Last time the two clubs met was in March with Pompey winning 2-1 at the Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Pompey have had a crazy transfer window so far, they’ve let go 22 players (including youth) and signed 12 players including ex Town midfielder Louis Thompson. Pompey have made the perfect start to the season. They beat Fleetwood and Crewe without conceding a goal which doesn’t make good reading for Town who are yet to score a league goal.

After the poor performance on Saturday at Morecambe, the travelling Town fans will want to get rewarded with a decent performance. Sam Cosgrove showed good signs when coming off the bench against Morecambe which will give the side a boost coming into this game. Cotterill will be desperate to see a good performance from Nathanael Ogbeta who Cotterill has publicly asked for better performances after not impressing so far this season.

CORBIN’S VIEW FROM THE STANDS

Our young inspirational reporter and massive Shrewsbury Town fan Corbin is back on the road again and he gave us his thoughts on our away League One game against Morecambe.

“Travelled up to Morecambe for my first visit to The Mazuma Stadium for Shrewsbury’s first away league game of the season, my Dad drove and we had and Kev with us. We got to Morecambe on time and walked to the ground talking about how good we were coming back against Lincoln in the cup on Tuesday night. We were all excited to see if Steve Cotterill would be that risky again and play Ogbeta out wide and Bennett through the middle.”

“We were in the ground by quarter to 3 and the excitement was building as the teams came out to loud applause from both sets of fans. Our starting line up had MarošI in goal with Pennington, Pierre and Nurse as a back three, Leahy and Bennett as wingbacks, Vela, Davis and Ogbeta in a midfield three with Udoh starting alongside Pyke.”

“The ground was electric as the game kicked off with both teams feeling each other out, Morecambe had a couple of shots wide or simple for Maroši while we had a chance or two. Vela hitting one that looped over and another one that hit Udoh who was offside. It seemed Morecambe were getting the decisions more than us as the referee was blowing up for everything, Davis went in the book for a rash challenge and then on 32 mins Vela misplaced a pass and Morecambe counter attacked. Ogbeta who was covering Leahy who was caught upfield clashed with the Morecambe forward and the ref pointed to the spot right in front of us away fans. We could hardly believe it, there was contact but not enough for the player to collapse like he had been shot. The penalty was converted sending Maroši the wrong way and the home team had the advantage 1-0.”

“We huffed and puffed but couldnt string anything together as Morecambe grew in confidence, they got a corner close to half time and yet again the problem that plagued us all last season and against Burton last week is we struggle to deal with set pieces. This time the ball swung in and the ball was headed towards goal, it hit our defenders and then there was a scramble. The ball came loose and the striker who won the penalty stabbed the ball past Maroši for 2-0.”

“Half time came with some away fans booing, not sure if this was against the referee or the teams performance.”

“The second half began with new signing number 9 Sam Cosgrove replacing Ogbeta, a change of shape with Pyke almost playing as an attacking midfielder and for first 5 to 10 minutes we looked better. Pierre narrowly missed the goal from a header but we seemed to keep getting pushed back by a Morecambe team that was full of confidence. Even the PA announcer at half time said “well we didnt expect to be this good”. The second half seemed to drift by, Daniels came on and Bloxham late on but by then the game was gone. To Bloxham’s credit the 10 minutes he played he didn’t create any panic in the Morecambe defence, who couldn’t believe they would have such a comfortable afternoon.”

“4 minutes time was added on which became 6 minutes with late subs and an injury which did nothing to change the mood from us away fans. The referee finally blew his whistle for full time, Morecambe were comfortable 2-0 winners and I would say the score could have been worse for us but for some good stops by Maroši and some poor finishing.”

“Its really hard to decide who was man of the match for us but us fans should get it for we never stopped singing and clapping. Both my Dad and me had sore throats from all the shouting and singing but I thought Bennett really tried hard to create things, he was often left upfield by Morecambes counter attacks but even when he moved into midfield after Daniels came on he still worked hard in a game we offered little, so man of the match is Elliot Bennett.”

“So with two games gone against teams we would have expected to get points from we have 0 points on the board and scored no league goals. Its very early days but we sit bottom not too much panic just yet but we need massive reinforcements especially in midfield, we have lost Norburn, Edwards, Goss, Walker and is Ogbeta going to still be here by September?”

“Today we lacked any finishing and I know people will say we struggled to score goals, well if our front players are not getting the service then they aren’t going to score. Our squad was so thin today Steve Cotterill named two goalies on the bench with Whalley, Ebanks Landell and Bowman all missing today. Unless new faces come in it could be a long season, we trust Steve and his coaches to get these players in and we trust him to get us moving forward. As Shrewsbury fans we always have ambitions at the start of the season with our expectations but we have to be real, no need to panic just yet after all it took 11 games before we won last season.”

“Portsmouth away on Tuesday night, then four home games running with two in the league and two in the cups. See you all there.”

“Love and peace, Corbin.”

Thanks to Corbin for his thoughts on the game against Burton Albion.

WHO ARE YA? MORECAMBE

Here at “Going Down The Oteley Road” we will be speaking to fans of our opposition throughout the season. Ahead of our first away game of the season against Morecambe, we had a chat with a Shrimps fan.

What’s your name?

Tyler Carter (middle in the photo)

Where are you from?

Born and raised in Morecambe.

How long have you supported Morecambe?

I’ve been going to games since I was 9/10, apart from a few odd ones when I was younger. So around 2009/10.

Who is your favourite ever Morecambe player?

The reasons for my favourite player have changed over the years, but in the 10 years I’ve followed I would probably say Alex Kenyon.

Who is your favourite ever Morecambe manager?

Jim Bentley is a Morecambe legend and did good things in difficult times for us, impossible to not like him.

Who should we watch out for from the current Morecambe team?

It’s very much a new team we’ve had to build so we’re not overly familiar with every player as of yet, but Coke Stockton is everything you want from a striker. Also Toumani Diagouraga is one of the most assured and talented players I’ve seen for us in midfield.

Where do you think you will finish in the league this season?

Our fans are realistic this season and will take anything above relegation.

What do you know about Shrewsbury Town?

I know you’ve had a lot of problems with changing your badge in recent history! But other than having a good history around the 2nd/3rd division not a great deal. I’ve seen Shrewsbury be somewhat of a yo-yo club, within League 1/2 in the last decade. But always a good team in League 2. I also recall in the media how Shrewsbury were the first English team to install rail seating, which was a great thing for the game and big teams have followed suit recently.

What do you think the score will be?

We’re expecting a big attendance (by our standards) for the first League 1 home game at our ground so I’m hoping it can make a difference and spur us on. But after a positive start to the season in the cup and league for us I would take a draw.

Big thanks to Tyler, for answering our questions.

MATCH PREVIEW

Sam Northwood previews tomorrow’s first League 1 away game of the season against Morecambe.

Venue: Globe Arena

Competition: League One

Time: 15:00

Head to Head record: Played 14, 7 Shrewsbury Town wins , 3 Draws, 4 Morecambe wins

Town will travel to Morecambe for the first away trip of the season. It’s also the first away game with away supporters allowed since February 2020.

Last time the two clubs met was in December 2017 in the FA Cup when Town ran out 2-0 winners with goals from Alex Rodman and Shaun Whalley.

After winning the League 2 play off final last season it quickly started to go downhill for Morecambe, they lost the manager Derek Adams to Bradford and then also lost a number of their key players. But new manager Stephen Robinson has got the team off to a good start with a draw in the opening game away at Ipswich and then an impressive win in the League Cup against Blackburn.

After the great comeback on Tuesday night, Town will hope to build on that going into this game. With the departure of Ollie Norburn Town now look short in midfield so reinforcements will be coming in. New signing Sam Cosgrove is likely to play a part in the game at some stage. Tom Bloxham could also push for a start.
