MATCH REACTION MATCH REACTION AND THE GDTOR MAN OF THE MATCH – IPSWICH TOWN

We spoke to some Salop fans to see what they thought of yesterday’s 3-0 defeat against Ipswich Town and we asked who the Man Of The Match was.

Dale Skitt – “Game over after 10 minutes, I’d probably go for Love again as MOTM although I do like Goss in midfield, showed some nice touches and can dictate play in midfield like Granty.”

Scott Lewis-Bullock – “Thought we played well and on another day we may have got something from the game. MOTM Josh Laurent.”

James Tomkinson – “Some reasonable football played but absolutely no inventiveness or flare from anyone on the pitch in white and purple. I want to like Morison but he doesn’t seem like he’s going to be the man to put the ball in the net regularly at all. Some very static defending too. Corbin was probably MOTM for us”

Andy Forrester – “Love MOTM again.. same thoughts as everyone else. Need a striker ASAP and up against Kettle from the start. Will be interesting to see the line up against Vale on Tuesday night.”

Will Nankivell – “Individual errors cost us.”

Brian Moxon – “Result not a true reflection on game to be honest, I thought we did ok considering the start we had. We made chances after the sending off. Lacking pace up front that will cause any defences trouble.Work in progress with the squad and formation. MOTM was close but just Laurent.”

Andy Rhodes – “I’m beginning to wonder why SR is insisting on starting with Morrison up front. He needs another up there with him as a proper pair. Him and Shaun don’t seem to be hitting it off. From what I know of it at least”

Richard Heath – “Was never gone to get anything due to the gulf between a respectable budget of Town’s wage structure and Marcus Evan’s wallet, need to move onto the next game!”

Going Down The Oteley Road Man Of The Match – JOSH LAURENT

Congratulations to Josh, next up for Salop is Port Vale away in the EFL Trophy.

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the king of the jollops, Bizzy for his thoughts on our game against Ipswich Town.

“Cracking days jollops in Ipswich, friendly fans and good owd boozers. It’s great to visit these big sides.”

“To the game I thought 3-0 flattered Ipswich but we were caught sleeping and gifted them the first two goals,to go to a place like Portman Road and concede like that meant it was game over before we started. Quite pleased with our general play though we are going to teams away from home and creating a few chances, sadly we are not sticking any away and the desire for a finisher can not be greater. But I’m actually enjoying our away performances better than the home ones.”

“Thought Morison did very little yesterday and the midfield generally ok. Laurent offers something a bit different and I thought he was our man of the match. A few rumblings of discontent towards Ricketts from some of the Salop faithfull which i can’t understand, if we were gettin battered and not creating chances I’d understand but we look decent and funnily enough made their keeper work harder than ours.”

“Please keep the faith, people have got to remember we are a mid to lower third tier side and not Barcelona. All in all an ok peformance despite the scoreline.”

“Will be the kids vs Vale on Tuesday i expect and will be good to see the likes of Rowland, Barnett and Udoh in action… COME ON YOU BLUES!”

CORBIN’S VIEW FROM THE STANDS

Our young inspirational reporter and massive Shrewsbury Town fan Corbin gives us his thoughts on yesterday’s away defeat at Ipswich Town.

“Well a disappointing result after what was an amazing day for me to walk out onto the pitch holding the match ball and the reaction from the Salop fans as I walked off the pitch. We had barely got to our seats and Shrewsbury were 1 nil down, a swift move down the right. The ball played across and the Ipswich player smashed it passed Max O’Leary, moments later Goss caught their winger outside the box, he fell in the box and the ref blew before thinking and then pointed to the spot. A penalty many of us could not believe it, Norwood smashed the penalty in and it was 2-0 inside 10 minutes.”

“We tried to get back into the game and Morison headed over, we hit the post and worked their goalie. Then on 35 mins Whalley got a second yellow and a red card for a challenge in the corner, a little harsh but we had to play 55 mins with 10 men.”

“In the second half we changed formation to a 441, we looked more solid but the game was very stop start with the referee too fussy over little things and we felt hard done by due to his decisions. He blew for double as many fouls as Ipswich and a lot were nothing tackles.”

“We tried to create chances and Dave Edwards went close with two headers that maybe he might have scored on another day. Ipswich scored a third which killed off any slim chance we had.”

“3-0, we deserved more from the game but were not helped by a poor referee and linesman. We all headed home with little to cheer. No league game next week due to international call ups but an EFL Trophy game away on Tuesday night at Port Vale.”

Thanks to Corbin for his thoughts on the game against Ipswich.

MATCH REACTION AND MAN OF THE MATCH

Our man who travels home and way following the mighty Shrewsbury Town Rhys Gratton, gives his views on Town’s 3-0 loss at Ipswich.

Ipswich Town 3 V 0 Shrewsbury Town (31/8/2019)

“Following on from our last away game in a fine win at Accrington, sandwiched by two very solid home performances against Rochdale and Burton respectively, there was cause for cautious optimism against many people’s promotion favourites, who went into this game on top of the pile.”

“That optimism faded within ninety seconds of the first whistle, when some sloppy play in the middle of the park led to Kayden Jackson bursting through and smashing the ball into the top corner over the despairing O’Leary.”

“That optimism was then completely dead before the ten minute mark, with referee Trevor Kettle controversially awarding a penalty, despite the foul appearing to occur out of the box. James Norwood then coolly stepped up and slid the ball under O’Leary to bring him to 5 goals this season. “

“Mr Kettle once again found himself at the centre of attention on the brink of half time, as another dodgy decision saw the red mist descend on Shaun Whalley for two very questionable yellow cards.”

“Despite being reduced to ten Salop appeared rejuvenated after the break, with a change in formation notably pushing Ryan Giles further forward. We were even creating a few chances, now shooting towards the end where the ever-buoyant Salopians were still bouncing by the side of the pitch. However the game was over as a contest on 70 minutes as Flynn Downes drilled low shot through a crowded penalty area to put the hosts three up and out of reach.”

“To their credit Shrewsbury continued to show 100% heart, commitment and desire until the final whistle in adverse circumstances, and undoubtedly should have had a penalty for handball in the closing stages, which Kettle claimed not to have seen.”

As the game wound to a close the town fans were still outsinging the Ipswich faithful, as had been the case for the whole ninety minutes, the fans truly did the club proud today with the unwavering support.”

“Overall, the scoreline was very misleading, as the game itself was very even, despite the circumstances, and the stats back that up. In a game where the entire team did the whole team proud it is hard to pick a man of the match, but mine goes to Josh Laurent, for another excellent display, and being our driving force in attack.”

IPSWICH V SALOP – WHATS THE SCORE?

Ahead of today’s League One game against Ipswich we asked fans what they think the score will be.

Nathan Macbeth – “1-1”

Will Smith – “2-0 Salop”

Darren Morris – “2-2 if we can take our chances. Maybe even sneak a 2-1”

Ross Jones – “2-1”

Daniel Bishton – “2-2 Morrison and Udoh late on to snatch a point”

Neil Thomas – “2-1 Salop. Last minute winner”

Gareth Davies – “I’d take 1-0 Town, but a point would be good”

Antony Downes – “0-4, they wont trouble Mighty Max in goal and I believe Morison is due a hat trick”

Mervyn Lowe – “I would take 0-0”

Warrick Porter – “Town win 2-0”

John Reece – “2-3 last minute winner”

Rob Harris – “1-1”

Martin Hughes – “Another smash and grab win 1-0 to Town.”

Bizzy – “2-1 Ipswich.. very narrow defeat…”

Terry Phillips – “Ipswich 2-0 Shrews”

Nick Tanner – “2-2. Ipswich will score but will always concede, usually Chambers fault”

A mixed bag of predictions this week, here’s hoping we put in a good shift against the team who currently occupy top spot.

WHO ARE YA? IPSWICH TOWN

Here at “Going Down The Oteley Road” we will be speaking to fans of our opposition throughout the season.

Ahead of our league game against Ipswich Town, we had a chat with an Ipswich fan.

What’s your Name?

Brad Terrell.

Where are you from?

Originally Chippenham, now live in Oxford.

How long have you supported Ipswich?

Since I can remember, my first game when I was around 6 or 7.

Who is your favourite ever Ipswich player?

Close call between Pablo Counago and Jason De Vos. Pablo was free scoring goals for us when I can first remember supporting Town and De Vos was a solid captain for us and a rock in defence. Was lucky enough to meet him when I was mascot for the club back in 2006.

Who is your favourite ever Ipswich manager?

Sir Bobby Robson is a hero of mine for many a reason but is before my time as a supporter, I am going to have to go with Paul Lambert as he has managed to bring the fans together again even after the relegation campaign last season.

Who should we watch out for from the current Ipswich team?

James Norwood showed what he was capable of last year with Tranmere and its now starting to come off the mark. Very strong contender of league top goal scorer.

Where do you think you will finish in the league this season?

As much as a lot of Town fans think we should walk the league this season, the league is harder than we think. Play offs is a must but can see us battling for the top spot.

What do you know about Shrewsbury Town?

Not too much, have aunt who is from the area and still goes to watch every now and again. You share an ex player with my local team Chippenham, James Constable.

What do you think the score will be?

3-1 Ipswich.

Big thanks to Brad, hope you enjoy the game.

MATCH PREVIEW

Sam Northwood previews tomorrow’s away game against Ipswich Town.

After another 0-0 draw at home to Burton on Saturday, Shrewsbury will make the long trip to East Anglia hoping they can surprise a few and get a result at Portman Road.

The last time the two clubs met is just over 10 years ago when both teams played out an entertaining 3-3 draw in the League Cup with Ipswich eventually winning on penalties. The three Town goal-scorers were Jake Robinson, David Hibbert and Shane Cansdell Sheriff. Well known Premier league striker Connor Wickham scored twice for Ipswich on the night. On the bench that night for Town was Andre Gray who would go on to succeed in the Premier League for Burnley and Watford respectively.

Former Shrewsbury fan favourites Jon Nolan and Toto Nsiala are currently at Ipswich but both of them are unlikely to be seen on the pitch on Saturday due to injuries. Saturdays game could be a bit early for both of them to return to League one action.

Ipswich are sitting at the top of League One coming into the game and they are tipped by many to win the league and I can see why. They are currently unbeaten in the league this season having won 3 games and drawing 2. They have scored in every game so far so will be a big threat in which the Town defence will have to be at the top of their game. Striker James Norwood is the joint top scorer in League One currently with 4 goals, closely followed by strike partner Kayden Jackson who will offer a different aspect of Ipswich’s play. Shrews will have to attack the game as Ipswich will enjoy the constant pressure if Shrews sit back too deep.

I can only see Town getting anything from this game if they attack Ipswich from the start and don’t play for a draw. If Town play too defensive I can only see Ipswich winning comfortably. Even though our defence is one of the best in the league, Ipswich have too much firepower up top to stop them for 90 minutes.

Score Prediction – 1-0 Ipswich

Predicted XI’s

LOOKING BACK WITH ADAM RODGERS…

Long time Town fan and a man who knows a lot about his Salop history, Adam Rodgers takes a look back at a past game against this weekends opponents Ipswich Town.

Shrewsbury Town 3-3 Ipswich Town 11/08/09

We have a mixed history against the Tractor Boys. Only 24 meetings have taken place in total with only 3 of those matches going our way. Since the 1950’s when the teams met regularly in the Division 3 South, there have been only 6 league meetings and a handful of cup ties. This week is our first visit to Portman Road since 1990 so will be the first trip to Ipswich for many of our fans.

I’m going to have a look back at the last time the two teams met, a League Cup thriller at the then Prostar Stadium 10 years ago in August 2009. Ipswich started well and took an early lead through Connor Wickham before Jake Robinson levelled the scores. Dave Hibbert pounced soon after to give Salop the lead but Alan Quinn and a second for Wickham just after the break put the championship side ahead again. Aussie defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff sent the tie into extra time by levelling things up again at 3-3.

After a cagey, goalless 30 minutes the dreaded penalty shoot out was required to separate the sides and the luck was with the Tractor Boys as keeper Shane Supple saved Robinson’s kick and a Graham Coughlan miss gave Ipswich a 4-2 win. Town fans went home disappointed but optimistic after an impressive start to the season under Paul Simpson full of free flowing attacking football.

This Saturday looks set to be a tough game against top of the table Ipswich but Town’s solid defence and recent away performance at Accrington will give them confidence.

AROUND THE WORLD…

Who would have thought it our brilliant club, Shrewsbury Town has fans in more places than just our shores. Today we chat to one of our Salop fans from Brazil, Carlos “Juninho” Alexandre. Be sure to follow his Brazilian Shrewsbury Town fans Twitter at @Shrewsbury_Br

Where are you from?

Caruaru, Pernambuco, Brazil.

How long have you supported Shrewsbury?

About 5 years.

What was the first game you went to?

I’ve never been to a game. My dream would be to go.

Who is your favourite Shrewsbury Town player of all time?

I followed a few players, but I can say that Jermaine Grandison, Ben Godfrey , Dean Henderson. The three always gave their lives for the team, which impressed me the most.

Who is your favourite Shrewsbury Town manager of all time?

Paul Hurst. Even leaving us to take on another team, it was that he took us to a spectacular season, reaching 2 finals.

Who is your least favourite player to play for Shrewsbury Town?

Doug Loft. Because he only played one game and that’s it. A real joke.

Which do you prefer Gay Meadow or Montgomery Waters Meadow?

Montgomery Waters Meadow, because I did not know the other. But I think this is the best.

What has been your favourite away game?

Shrewsbury against Charlton. The anthological goal of Jon Nolan, who took us to the final of the Playoffs in 2017/18.

What has been your favourite moment as a Shrewsbury Town fan?

When I was selected for an interview with Shropshire Star’s journalist, Lewis Cox, there I felt I was at the top. Another time, was when the club liked one of my tweets.

What is your favourite Shrewsbury Town kit?

The orange from last season. Very beautiful.

Where do you think we will finish this season?

With the cleansing of the squad and with the arrival of players, I think we can get a place in the playoffs. The joy in the team is very captivating. This is very good, to see smiles between players and the harmony arrives is different.

Why do you love supporting Shrewsbury Town?

Why do I love? Simply because this club, made me happier. I was going through a bad situation, and I decided to open that profile. In that, it was giving me more joy, I was more interested in knowing the news of the club. So I can say that Shrewsbury practically saved my life.

What made you choose to support Shrewsbury Town?

As I said above, Shrewsbury practically changed my life. I was playing Fifa, where the team I went to was Shrewsbury. I started to like the team, I decided to follow it deeply and today we are here.

How many Shrewsbury Town fans do you know of in Brazil?

Few, only my real friends. Here in Brazil, the team is still not very well known, but we will fight for it to be.

Massive thanks to Carlos for speaking to us and for supporting our great club. If you know anyone or are a Salop fan living or from another country just drop us a message on either our Facebook page https://m.facebook.com/GoingDownTheOteleyRoad/ or on Twitter @GDTORsalop
