CORBIN’S VIEW FROM THE STANDS

Our young inspirational reporter and massive Shrewsbury Town fan Corbin is back and gives us his thoughts on our home game against Northampton Town.

“Back at The Meadow for the first time since March, I was really excited that Dad and Me were part of the 1000 fans involved in a trial to get Football Fans back into grounds against newly Promoted Northampton Town.”

“A new season and a chance to see the new players and hope for our season ahead, after listening to the Portsmouth hame last week I was looking forward to Shrewsbury going forward in this new 4-3-3 formation.”

“Shrewsbury started with new signing Sarkic in goal, the four at the back of Golbourne, Williams, Ebanks Landell and Marlon Fossey with his Fellaini hairstyle. A midfield 3 of Brad Walker, Josh Vela and Scott High, a front 3 of Whalley, Cummings and Pyke as the striker.”

“The game kicked off and Ryan Jervis was still announcing the team, a ball pumped up field by Northampton centre back had the visitors forward jump at same time for the ball with Ebanks Landell and there was a nasty clash of heads. The ref stopped the game and the physio’s from both teams ran onto the pitch to aid the injured, the visitors forward was still up on his feet but Ebanks Landell lay on the floor for longer. 5 mins later he was helped off the pitch by the medical team with a bandage on his head. Sam Ricketts made a change moving Walker to centre back and brought another new signing Josh Daniels on to play in the middle three.”

“That very early stoppage and injury seemed to knock the stuffing out of us as we struggled to do anything with the ball and it wasn’t long before Northampton took the lead. The first real chance for either team as Fossey got all tangled up on the left, a low driven cross was smashed in by Mark Marshall and Northampton were 1-0 up in the 12th Minute.”

“All the fans in the ground responded in a positive way shouting and cheering Shrewsbury to get focused and get into the game. The goal perhaps spurned us into life as we started winning the ball in forward areas and were trying to get Cummings, Whalley and Pyke on the ball. Pyke got free in the 6 yard box but former Shrewsbury goalkeeper Steve Arnold stopped the threat for Northampton.”

“Town continued as we started threatening even more looking for equaliser. Cummings cutting inside putting one just wide and a cross from Golbourne with Pyke inches away. Whalley’s turn next as his jinking run cut in from the left his toe poke was saved well from Arnold.”

“As the half time whistle neared Shrewsbury were threatening more and more Whalley again laying it off to Golbourne who smashed it but for Arnold it might have been level. Cummings then with another cut inside with the ball going wide.”

“Half time and plenty to be happy about despite losing, take away the opening 15 minutes and we dominated with the only thing missing a Shrewsbury goal.”

“Second half started as people were taking their seats as Jason Cummings looked to be clean through but the flag saved Northampton with offside given, groans from Blocks 14 and 15 suggested he was onside.”

“Moments later a wonderful cross switch pass from Cummings put Whalley in but his shot was saved by Arnold. A Similar pass got Whalley in again and his right foot shot ended up in the net, us 1000 fans celebrated as Bizzy nearly ran off celebrating before remembering the new rules. Shrewsbury’s equaliser was very deserved. Straight from kick off Whalley was causing problems for Northampton he was cruelly brought down on edge the box, up stepped Brad ‘Ronaldo’ Walker but his free kick attempt just hit the wall and spun away.”

“The goal had given us the belief, myself and the crowd could only see one winner. We were dominating until a moment of madness from our new goalkeeper. A long ball from the Northampton right back looked too long for the forwards and a rushing Sarkic completely missed the ball in his attempt to clear it, the ball fell into the path of Hoskins who passed it into the empty net. My Dad said you have to be mad to be a goalkeeper and it looks like we have another one in Sarkic.”

“We were 2-1 down and it could have been worse moments later but for Sarkic’s superb diving save. The visitors had weathered our storm as they threatened more, Udoh on for Pyke as Town searched for an equaliser. With 10 mins to go Fossey with a back post header just didn’t fall kind for Cummings, Scott High then hit a banger that got charged down and Whalley went close with a header just over.”

“Into the last 5 minutes as we searched for a second goal for the draw, Sam Ricketts made a bizarre sub like many he did last season Love on for Fossey who had grown into the game as it went on. Maybe take a chance and bring Rowland on for a defender but suppose there wasn’t much other options on the bench. But would have been happy losing 3-1 trying than a like for like defensive change.”

“The final whistle blew Northampton had beat us on our big day of returning fans, beating us 2-1 but amazingly we had a lot of the ball nearly 75% of it according to the stats. But stats don’t win football matches goals do and for all our huff and puff we didn’t have that killer touch. But it is early in the season and with the strange end to last season due to the Corona Virus, this was only our third competitive game since March. We have some injuries, a player suspended and the new players need time to settle in. So it wasn’t’ the best result but you can see our style of play, I think we will soon see the goals going in at the right end and our results improving too.”

“The trial for fans was done really well, it was so good to be back and lets hope it isn’t long before more of us are seeing our Blue and Amber team more regular. Brilliant work by everyone involved for getting us in, it was a strange atmosphere with no away fans but felt like a EFL Trophy game to begin with as just the West Stand was used in the trial but as the game went on the noise from just 1000 of us was just like it was before all this virus lockdown and social distancing.”

“My Man of The Match is Shaun Whalley, he is Mr Shrewsbury, our longest serving player and he might be getting older but he is showing he is still a good tricky player. He was involved with a lot of the going forward in a position that he is having to adjust too. Also a shout out to the new boys as Daniels did well in the middle, Scott High and Marlon Fossey grew into the game. I like our keeper Sarkic, he is a bit mad, the mistake was a crazy moment but proved to be a good shot stopper and he will win us more points this season but Whalley gets it as his goal was a cracker that wouldn’t look out of place in any league and he ran non stop.”

“Hope it won’t be long until we return, stay safe everyone.”

Thanks to Corbin for his thoughts on the game against Northampton.

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts as fans returned for our League 1 game against Northampton Town.

“Do you remember that sprout i used to knock off at the dry cleaners mon?? I had a cracking time with her i can tell ya and never went short of coat-hangers.”

“Emotional day for Shrews fans everywhere, I was one of the lucky 1,000 Salopians who managed to get a ticket and for the first time in over six months we were going to be able to see our heroes live, after the usual pre match haunts I made my way down to the Meadow. It was such a lovely relaxed atmosphere from fans and stewards alike, the sun soaked scenery of the railway line and super blues way was a pleasure to behold. Amorous courting couples smooching away, the faint whiff of semi spilt Carlsberg on the warm tarmac, jollopers and teetotal fans mixing without a care in the world. It really was a moment to put a smile in the heart of every true Salopian.”

“As I staggered/walked to my seat I was very optimistic Salop were going to collect all three points today, Pieere missing was a major setback and disaster struck straight away when Ebanks Landell was involved in a clash of heads which forced him off, with easily your two best centre halfs missing chances of any positive result surely dimmed a little. Early doors it took the stuffing out of us and a early Cobblers opener was no suprisre, the goal did wake up Salop from there laconic slumbers though and for the rest of the half we were easily the better side.”

“The midfield three were getting a hold of the game, Cummings in a position where I still dont think he’s entirely comfortable with was seeing alot of the ball and put a couple of cracking passes in, a very industrious Pyke should have done a lot better with the one chance, despite his workrate is he the 20 goal a season striker we crave? I sadly can’t see it, Udoh must be sniffin for a starters spot but would he work in a 4-3-3 does he have the strength to play it for 90 minutes??”

“Fair-play second half carried on as before Town on top, Whalley the pick of the Salop frontline, relentless energy from him and has got to up there as one of my favourite Town players in years. With his infectious personality, his sheer workrate and loyalty to the club is a pleasure to behold and after a decent through ball from the Cumdog he got a deserved equaliser.”

“A random sprout came to me telling me about the discomfort from having her nipple pierced, put your udder in ice owd girl I gleefully told her.”

“To be fair Northampton looked a very average outfit, didn’t know at the time but they had ten first teamers out. Not being funny but Salop should be knocking teams like this out of sight, but finishing is a continual demon to Salop still. We average scoring under a goal a game under Sam’s stewardship and this needs to change quickly. The change of formation of course is alot more refreshing but not helpful if we can’t put the ball in the net. The least said about their winner the better, big mistake from Sarkic but overall he was very sound. So not going to go too mad over it, all part of his learning curve.”

“Man of the match was a choice of two for me, Mr utility himself Brad Walker had another very sound 90 minutes, did what was asked of him at the back but Whalley just pips it for me another great 90 minutes from the legend himself.”

“No major causes for concern yet but it’s a game we should have won easily against frankly rather mediocre opposition, still a quality forward man needs bringing in. A bit worried Salop seemed to run out of ideas as the game drawn to a end. Very early days though and sure we can bounce back vs Plymouth.”

PLAYER RATINGS & MAN OF THE MATCH

Shrewsbury Town 1 V 2 Northampton Town

Sarkic – 6/10

Made an unbelievable save in the second half but was partly at fault for the Northampton winner, still looks a quality keeper and coped well with crosses.

Fossey – 5/10

In my opinion was the weak link on the day and got beaten far too easy, looked 2 seconds behind everyone else but he’s just came back from a serious injury so there’s still time to improve yet.

Ebanks Landell – N/A

Went off injured minutes into the game.

Williams – 7/10

Travelled very well with the ball when coming out of defence, used his passing ability very well and kept the midfield involved. A much more better performance than his previous two.

Golbourne – 6/10

Didn’t have the best of starts to the game and was getting beat easily but then grew into the game. Still not sure if he’ll be first choice left back when the transfer window closes.

Walker – 7/10

Another good performance and is no doubt the first name on the team sheet at the moment, defended excellent when called upon even though he was playing out of his normal position.

High – 7/10

Looked calm and composed on the ball again and is always an option to receive a pass, used the ball well and linked well with Whalley in parts.

Vela – 5/10

Was very quiet throughout, he’s at his best when he’s partnered with Norburn in midfield. The jury is still out on Vela.

Whalley8/10

Whalley was back to his best today and looked to thrive infront of the fans, was positive throughout and took his goal very very well.

Cummings – 6/10

Was a threat all game again despite holding onto the ball too long at times, made some very good runs from out wide in the second half. Looked far too narrow in the first half which meant we struggled to make any positive attacks down the right hand side which did change in the second half.

Pyke – 5/10

Quiet game for him, linked well at times again but he’ll be looking to have more of an impact on games soon, Udoh is now seriously pushing for a starting spot so he’ll need to impress.

Subs:

Daniels – 6/10

Did some great passing and looks like he could potentially have a great strike on him.

Udoh – 6/10

Held the ball up well and was playing as the target man late on, had a very good chance to score late on but just couldn’t get the shot away.

Love – N/A

Didn’t have much time to make an impact, like the look of his long throws.

WHO ARE YA? NORTHAMPTON TOWN

Here at “Going Down The Oteley Road” we will be speaking to fans of our opposition throughout the season. Ahead of our first League 1 home game of the season against Northampton Town, we had a chat with a Cobblers fan.

What’s your name?

Jamie Stimpson

Where are you from?

Milton Keynes

How long have you supported Northampton?

1994! First season at Sixfields Stadium.

Who is your favourite ever Northampton player?

I have two. Josh Low, I always remember seeing him running down the wing. It was one of my earliest memories of the excitement at football. I started watching at a young age and I always remember whenever he had the ball, fans would stand up expecting him to create some Magic. And John Frain, I went to the old Wembley and saw Frain put a retaken free kick into the top corner to win us promotion against Swansea, I’ll never forget that moment.

Who is your favourite ever Northampton manager?

It wasn’t always the most exciting football but it’s got to be Chris Wilder (sometimes we were incredible to be fair!) We were pretty unbeatable. Many games we’d keep a clean sheet and nick a win and others we’d control! It was unfortunate he left for Sheffield United but we can’t blame him. He’s a class man and a class manager, he deserves all the success he gets. I just remember Northampton Town FC as a whole being solid on and off the fields a real unity.. great memories!

Who should we watch out for from the current Northampton team?

We have so many injuries. it’s been a short but frustrating start. Nicky Adams adds quality and experience. When he plays, he’ll create and cause problems, with his non stop running and deliveries. We have a couple of new signings that are tipped for potential greatness at this level but, I’ll let their performances speak come Saturday!

Where do you think you will finish in the league this season?

I’m quite optimistic that as the season progresses, we will gel and perform better as a unit. If our defence can gel fast and we add to our strike force, I think we could achieve mid table, which most fans would be happy about!! Not everyone likes Keith Curles style of play but we got promoted and that’s the aim right? So it’ll be interesting to see what happens in the next season or two. Staying up is priority of course!

What do you know about Shrewsbury?

You got a good result away to Portsmouth, finishing with 10 men. In recent years we’ve done OK against the shrews but every now and then there is a high scoring game. You’re quite similar to us I think, in the respect that If you turn up, You’ll give anyone a good game. On another day, it’s not that great! It’s so early in the season, it’ll be an interesting game!

What do you think the score will be?

Purely being bias, I’m going for a 2-1 Northampton win. It’ll be a tough game for us, our injuries are having a massive effect on us already but we have a “together” team that on their day, can pull out a performance to nick a win.

Big thanks to Jamie, for answering our questions.

MATCH PREVIEW

Sam Northwood previews tomorrow’s first League 1 home game against Northampton Town.

Venue: Montgomery Waters Meadow

Competition: League One

Time: 15:00

Head to Head record: Played: 53, Shrewsbury wins 22, Northampton wins 20, Draws 11

Shrewsbury Town will be kicking off their home campaign in-front of 1,000 fans who are all included in the trial of fans at football grounds. Last time the 2 clubs met was in the 2017/18 season after Jon Nolan equalised to make the game 1-1. Ollie Norburn will now be pushing for a starting spot after his cameo against Portsmouth but might have to wait a little longer due to the promising performances of Walker, High and Vela in recent weeks. Aaron Pierre is suspended.

Newly promoted Northampton Town drew their first game of the season 2-2 at home to Wimbledon and then lost 4-0 to Bristol City this week in the League Cup. They will most likely start with a former Shrewsbury goalkeeper, they have Steve Arnold and former loanee Jonathan Mitchell so there will be a familiar face in the Northampton line up. Defender Jospeh Mills could also be involved, he was once on loan to Shrews during the Mike Jackson era.

RADIO GA GA

My take on Saturdays game away at Portsmouth, but from the perspective of listening on ifollow.

Finally got ifollow working with 9 minutes gone but with Pompey commentary.

Salop seemed to be winning balls with ease in defence and up the other end we were winning lots of corners but nothing came from it.

Pierre gave away a daft free kick for pushing the Pompey player outside of the box and sounded lucky to stay on the pitch. The resulting free kick was put just wide of the post, a relief to for Salop.

The Pompey side seems riddled with ex Salopians, but luckily the Town team are keeping them quiet. As it sounds like we seemed confident at the back, coping with the Portsmouth attacks.

The mics seemed to be in Sam Ricketts pocket as I could clearly hear the gaffer shouting his instructions from the touch line.

Cummings and Pike seemed to be trying to create chances but couldn’t muster anything. From what I can make out from the Pompey biased commentary Walker had a good first 45. 0-0 sounded about right at half time with neither side getting a grasp on the game. Strong defensive first half but need to push on forward and create something for the strikers.

Second half began and my lug holes are treated to the tones of Stuart Dunn!!

Walker did well to create an early chance with a neat one two.

Both teams seem to be cancelling each other out but Salop looking a little more dangerous than Pompey. Cummings seeming to be trying to get balls in but nothing coming of it, Portsmouth counter in this end to end start to the second half. Šarkić sounded like he was confident in the goal.

Think a change could be needed maybe bring on Udoh to spice things up at the top end of the pitch. Salop stalwart Whalley trying time create out wide but needed a better ball than a little dink.

At this point of the game and that Salop have the slight edge in the game it’s ideal time to make the most of it and get a goal.

Great to hear that the skipper Ollie Norburn was warming up on the sidelines.

Fossey replaced GDTOR sponsored player Ro-Shaun Williams who seemed to take a knock.

As the half went on Šarkić seemed to be pipping Walker in the race to Man Of The Match.

Whalley with a good ball in from a free kick but a blue shirt put it over for a corner. Pompey again countering but Fossey and Golbourne did the dirty work to ensure it stayed 0-0.

Again Šarkić on form to stop a long shot from Portsmouth. The on loan keeper seems to be a great addition.

Norburn brought on for the last 15, great to see the skipper back and a boost for the team.

Pompey seemed to put their foot on the gas as we enter the final part of the game, but Salop happy to take charge at the back.

Barnett the last change for Town for Cummings, would have liked to have seen Udoh on but good to see the young lad back for the Town.

Late chance for Pierre from a Whalley corner, winning another corner. Salop need to take advantage now. Second corner defended a Pyke effort off the line with a great save from ex Town man MacGillivray.

Scary moment for Shrewsbury as the home side hit the crossbar. But great to hear Salop still pushing for the win as the game heads towards its end. Fossey and Golbourne getting forward well and both creating openings late on.

Aaron Pierre sent off for a second yellow card, giving away a free kick in dangerous position. Trying to fix an error but took the Pompey player down. Šarkić yet again on fine form to push the free kick around the post.

In my opinion a good point away at a team who you would expect to be up at the top end of the table come the end of the season.

From what I heard my Man Of The Match was debutant keeper Matija Šarkić

PLAYER RATINGS & MAN OF THE MATCH

Player Ratings V Portsmouth

Sarkic– 8/10

A great debut for the young keeper and looks way ahead of League One level already, has similarities to when Dean Henderson was here, will have a big future ahead of him. A candidate for Motm

Williams– 6/10

Was powerful down the right hand side and was an improvement on last week, still was caught out of position a few times but a steady performance

Pierre– 6/10

Was solid all game and would have been a 7/10 if it wasn’t for his red card at the end of the game, didn’t look as fully fit as he normally does but that’s due to his slight injury last week.

Ebanks Landell– 6/10

Was a big threat from corners and dealt very well with Marquis, gave the ball away a little bit but never came to anything still not back to his very best yet but won’t take long

Golbourne– 7/10

Attacked and defended well all game, proves a big threat when going forward and is still improving each game he’s playing despite his age.

Walker- 9/10

His best performance in a Shrews shirt, another good performance and is very quickly turning into one of the first names on the team sheet, used his height and strength to power up and down the pitch and could of easily scored a hatrick on another day, turning out to be a vital player this season if he stays fit. Man Of The Match for me.

High– 7/10

Looked calm and composed on the ball again and is always an option to receive a pass, has a great eye for a through ball.

Vela– 6/10

Did his job, didn’t do anything that stood out but a solid performance, hopefully he now can kick on this season and prove his potential.

Whalley-6/10

Vital season for Whalley and will need to start scoring again if he wants to carry on being a regular starter. Proved a threat again and made some nice touches.

Cummings– 6/10

Solid performance, playing on the right hand side let him cut on to his left foot a lot more again but could have played a bit closer to Pyke at times who seemed quite isolated. Had a good chance in the first half which he he’ll believe he should have done better with

Pyke– 6/10

Wasn’t as a high of standard as last week which was no fault of his own, looked isolated at times but still held up the ball well when given the chance, could have and should have probably scored late on

Subs:

Fossey– 6/10

Did some great defending late on after a dangerous Portsmouth attack which could have easily ended up with a Portsmouth goal if he didn’t get it right, will be first choice right back very soon

Barnett– 5/10

Was quiet when he came on but showed glimpses of what he can do, I get the feeling it’s a now or never season for Barnett

Norburn– 5/10

Didn’t have much time to make an impact, so it’s very hard to judge, great to see the captain back from a serious injury and will be interesting to see the partnership with Walker

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts on our League 1 opener against Portsmouth.

“Theres plenty of room in my trousers unfortunately.”

“Well it was the opening League game of the season normally filled with excitement but it felt like I went to a celebrity swingers and after the picking the keys out of the owd Petri dish I ended up with Irene Handl, poor owd Metal Mickey would have been gutted by her behaviour. If watching a substandard stream is the only option for the forseable future you can stuff it, never been so detached from watching Salop in my life but this is the way of things sadly. The whole world has gone bloody puddled.”

“Settled down with some minature babychams to be confronted by Sunderland vs Bristol Rovers, what in the name of greek buggery is going on? I rushed to find my owd wireless, ploughing through the crackle and hiss the dulcit tones of the world service, wogan at breakfast and Marlene’s adulterous antics on the Archers ringing in my lobes, they dont call her Miss warm ankles for nothing her knickers are always there.”

“Anyway back to the footy, finally found Dunny on the dial and soon later the dodgy stream finally came on. A bit of a shock he dropped young Harry between the sticks but fair-play a fully justified decision, Sarkic oozed calmness composure and class and it was almost like Hendo was back in goal. The debutant didn’t have to do anything outstanding in goal but did it clinically and a major reason to a opening clean sheet. Again as said last year another very good defensive display was very suprised to see Ro Shaun start at right back considering we’ve got two in our squad but I think he got the nod due to his physical presense and didnt let himself down. The card happy Charlie B was on fine form a bloody ridiculous opening yellow for Pierre but it came to haunt us with the red at the end, no real need to panic next week with Ro Shaun slipping in with the dependable Ebanks Landell and hopefully a start for Fossey, who is potentially another gem of a signing for Sam.”

“Pompey will no doubt be challenging this season but fair-play to Salop we never let them have a foothold on the game until the last 15 minutes. Work wise and commitment Salop were utterly relentless and we really put a proper shift in, the midfield three were major factors in this. Vela understandbly tired in the end but was very busy, Scott High looks like he’s played at this level for years such a mature performance again and always looking to put balls through to the frontmen, rare to see a lad so young with such an owd head on his shoulders big thankyou to Dean Whitehead spotting him.”

“The most impressive outfield player for me was Brad Walker bloody hell the lad looks like a new signing, me and many other were a bit critical of him and saw him as a squad player who would only make the odd apperance in the EFL trophy but great to be proven wrong, strength in abundance and good with his feet too. If only he kept his composure when going on that wonderful run but for the second week running bloody outstanding.”

“We did have a couple of sniffs at goal but Whalley apart who put his normal shift in, the balance didnt look quite right up top Pyke looked a bit isolated for me he needed Cummins next to him and not stuck out wide where the Cumdog struggled to get to grips with the game. It was no doubt a more full blooded encounter than last weeks glorified friendly at Middlesbrough the space we had at that game wont be available at most League One teams, you just dont get time on the ball, so a bit of a concern with a lone striker like that. But mind you we didn’t complain with Carlton Morris under Hurst.”

“I finished my babychams with a head more fuzzier than Bella Embergs after Cooperman finally gave her his loins and reflected on another overall very good display by Town. We could have won it on another day, not many teams will come away from Fratton Park stifiling the home team like that a great performance all round overall.”

“Opening game at the Meddah next week whispers of maybe letting a very restricted crowd in but can’t see it, one thing I know from seeing highlights and games across the country that football is f##k all without the fans.”

“Good luck in reading this jollop induced owd drivel.”
