PORTSMOUTH V SALOP – WHATS THE SCORE?

Ahead of today’s opening League 1 game of the season against Portsmouth we asked Salop fans what they think the score will be.

Phillip Edwards – “1-1”

Kelly Marie – “I’m hoping 2-1 Town win”

Dave Sambrook – “3-0 to Portsmouth”

Mark Tuner – “0-0”

Paul Horvath – “This is the best time to play Portsmouth before they start to build any confidence, I’m going for a 1-0 win for Town. Arron Pierre to score for Town”

Carole Yapp – “2-1 win to our Town. Come on you lads”

Barry Robert Nicolaus – “4-1 to Portsmouth. We are a bit flakey at the back and still do not have a proven goalscorer or our best player (Norburn) fit and goalkeeping looks an issue.”

Allan Kynaston – “3-0 to Portsmouth. We haven’t done enough in the closed season to build a team for the new formation. It will be a long season!”

Martin Wall “1-1”

Dave Edwards – “4-1 Town. No problem”

Sam Morecroft – “If we scored three away at Boro the. we can score away at Portsmouth! I’m going 3-2 Salop”

Rob Ball – “2-2”

David Horwood – “0-2 Away win”

Richard Davies – “A draw would be a result”

Charlie Wilkinson – “Hopefully a win but probably will be a draw 1-1”

Ross Jones – “2-1 Blue And Amber”

Paul Jeffries – “A sneaky 1-0 win”

Alan Painter-Jones – “2-2”

Mixed bag of predictions but I think we can all agree that it’s great to be back.

Portsmouth

Paul Cook, I loved the style of football we played whilst at Pompey.

Who should we watch out for from the current Portsmouth team?

Ronan Curtis, as his pace is phenomenal as is his crosses just sad we haven’t got a striker with end product.

Where do you think you will finish in the league this season?

Couldn’t say where as it’s going to be the toughest campaign we have had since being in this league, but hopefully play off’s at least.

What do you know about Shrewsbury?

Not much really other than I rate your manager.

What do you think the score will be?

I reckon 1-1 or maybe 2-1 Pompey.

Big thanks to Steven, for answering our questions.

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

He’s back…. We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts on our Carabao Cup game away against Middlesbrough.

“She can have my owd kidney if she wants?? Nah your alright monner there not much use pickled…”

“Football wise 2020 has been one of the most random, bizarre years ever, I never thought a season would be curtailed due to a pandemic. But it was the right decision at the time though and six months later we still canna go and watch the footy due to the ongoing silly restrictions but Friday was our first competitive game since early March. I can’t tell you bugger all on how we fared pre season, some daft musical highlights online and the odd report from the brilliant Lewis Cox were our only gauge on whats been going on.”

“But the vibe pre season has been a positive one, a more attacking style from Sir Samuel and a positive change in the backroom has given fans plenty of cause for optimism. We’ve some young blood signed ready to prove themselves and play their heart out for the badge, although we’re still short numbers wise I’ve got a feeling we will hold our own this season.”

“So Salop headed to Middlesbrough despite it being a cup game it was a glorified tune up for the upcoming league campaign, this was the first Salop game I’ve missed in god knows how long and my enthusiasm for the coming season was at an all time low but still tuned into i follow like many others.”

“I sat in-front of my tv, love blob containers and Eddie Yates vest freshly ironed, a tray of mothers pride piklets freshly toasted and a mug of steaming bournvita to wash it down. Salop started in a 4-3-3 formation missing the likes of Pierre, Norbs, Vela and Udoh from the line up, I was a tad worried.”

“For a pre season match it was one of the most enjoyable Salop games I’ve seen in a long time every player played there part, loved the way how Salop went about things passing it out from the back. Ebanks Landell was an utter rock as normal, Ro Shaun shaky at times and did go missing for the second goal but recovered after that, Love and Golbourne going forward when they could and all seemed very comftable with the system. True to say it was a debut to forget for Harry between the sticks but he will learn from it, despite his two major errors his general play was decent, handling from crosses very good and good distribution too. Lets not criticise him too heavily theres obviously a very good keeper there, Sarkic will be a similar type of keeper so competition for the number one jersey will be venomous, much better not to have an obvious number 1 I feel.”

“Must admit I was a bit concerned looking at the teamsheet for the midfield three as it looked weak and lightweight but my fears were soon gone. Edwards did seem to struggle a bit but it looks like we’ve got a real gem in Scotty High, absolute quality performance, as seen the lad will shoot from anywhere, can pick a pass and will get stuck in when needed. He reminded me of Paul Evans from the 90s, great shift from Brad Walker too as he spread the ball around and was almost like captain material in the middle. I have had a go at him in the past but if he can perform like that he will be a great option, still see Norbs and Vela as regulars so maybe Davey Edwards will be used as a squad man this season but fears about lack of quality in the middle have been cooled somewhat.”

“Town went with a front three, Pyke was very impressive as he was reminiscent of Carlton Morris, both similar types of players. Pyke held the ball up really well and looks to have good feet too and on another day would have buried that chance, looks a grafter and potentially could get 15 plus this season. Cummings seemed to struggle with the formation at times but again I’ll say hes a cracking talent when his minds on the game as his finish showed that. A big season for him and Udoh to prove they have got what it takes, I think both will be very capable.”

“Man of the match for me was Scotty High just for his goal alone. Ebanks ,Pyke and Brad Walker were outstanding too.”

“Overall impression despite the mistakes, I was very impressed on the way Salop went about things, early days but think we are in for an entertaining season on the field and it could be a rollercoaster of emotions. A big well done to Sam for changing tactics and our style of play, because lets be honest it bored most of us to tears last year.”

“Unsure if i will watch the Pompey game online, as some good local FA Cup action about so live football with a jollop in hand sounds more appealing. As long as these restrictions remain the thought of watching live footy at the meddah in such a sterile environment dunna sound an appetising one. Just off to milk the owd sprouts udders.”

MATCH REACTION AND MAN OF THE MATCH

Player Ratings:

BURGOYNE– 4/10
Was at fault for two of the goals but it was his debut and his first competitive game for a long time so hopefully will be improvement yet

LOVE– 7/10
Attacked and defended well all game, looked like the player he was at the start of last season, hopefully it continues

WILLIAMS– 5/10
Wasn’t at his best, Could have done better with Middlesbrough’s 2nd goal and some moments due to lack of concentration, was solid enough though in other parts of his game.

EBANKS LANDELL– 6/10
Was solid throughout without being extraordinary, will imagine he will start next week alongside Pierre

GOLBOURNE– 7/10
Similar to Donald Love and attacked and defended well all game, proves a big threat when going forward and will be a serious challenge to whoever comes in at left back during the transfer window.

WALKER– 7/10
One of his best performances in a Shrews shirt, passed well and very rarely let any Middlesbrough player get in behind him, looked a lot stronger on the ball. Expect him to feature more this season

HIGH- 8/10
Standout MOTM, excellent strike which opened the scoring and looked calm and composed every time he got the ball. Looks a top talent and could be a key player for Shrews this season

EDWARDS- 6/10
Did his job, didn’t do anything that stood out but a solid performance, looks as if he’s now fully fit and will be one of the key players this season. Has adapted to play anywhere in the midfield area so will be a huge benefit to the side

WHALLEY-6/10
Caused worries for the Middlesbrough full back at times and was very direct, new tactics and formation suits him and should be back to his best if he stays fully fit. Will hope to be amongst the goals more this season

CUMMINGS– 7/10
Impressive performance, playing on the right hand side let’s him cut on to his left foot a lot more which created difficulty for the Boro defence, he took his goal very very well and will hope to reach double figures this season.

PYKE– 8/10
Brilliant performance by Pyke in which he deserved his well took goal, could have easily got another but his hold up play and him linking up with the wingers looked a threat all game, looks like he will be an important player

Subs:
UDOH– 6/10
Made some nice runs when he came on and very nearly scored, it could be a big season for Udoh.

DANIELS– 5/10
Was quiet when he came on but showed glimpses of what he could do, will hopefully fulfill his potential

FOSSEY– 5/10
Didn’t have much time to make an impact, only just came back from a serious injury so will be nice to see what he can bring to the team

MATCH PREVIEW – MIDDLESBROUGH

Middlesbrough Vs Shrewsbury Town

Venue: Riverside Stadium
Competition: Carabao Cup
Time: 17:30
Head to Head record: Played 16 times, Middlesbrough have won 9, Shrewsbury have won 4 and a draw has been the outcome 3 times.

Shrewsbury Town – Town will be kicking off the season again championship opposition Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup. Shrews have had a good record against championship clubs in recent years so they will be confident of getting a result in this one. It will be very different for Shrews as many of the players have never played behind closed doors before. New signings Josh Daniels, Rekeil Pyke, Scott High and Marlon Fossey will all hope to feature at some stage. It is likely new goalkeeper Matija Sarkic won’t be involved as he has been called up to the Montenegro squad for the Nations Legaue, unless he has been given special permission to play. It might be too soon for the return of Ollie Norburn as he underwent knee surgery during the lockdown period. Josh Vela may also miss the game if his red card from the last game before lockdown against Oxford is still carried over.

Middlesbrough- Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock may look towards some of his younger players to play in the game. After a string of departures in the centre back position Middlesbrough currently only have 2 centre backs with championship experience so may look to less experienced players.

Key Players:
Middlesbrough- Ashley Fletcher
Shrewsbury Town- Dan Udoh

Predicted XI’s

Shrewsbury Town:

Burgoyne
Fossey
Pierre
Williams
Golbourne
High
Goss
Edwards
Whalley
Udoh
Cummings

Middlesbrough:

Pears
Spence
Wood
Hall
Bola
Browne
Howson
Saville
Johnson
Fletcher
Walker

Score prediction: 1-1, Shrewsbury to win on penalties

WHO ARE YA? MIDDLESBROUGH

Here at “Going Down The Oteley Road” we will be speaking to fans of our opposition throughout the season. Ahead of our Carabao Cup game away against Middlesbrough, we had a chat with a Boro fan.

What’s your name?

Owen Swift

Where are you from?

South Middlesbrough (the posh bit haha)

How long have you supported Middlesbrough?

Too long haha Since about 2008 I’ve had a season ticket but I followed them for a while because my dad and brother worked at the club.

Who is your favourite ever Middlesbrough player?

Tuncay Sanli, I was a massive fan of overhead kicks and he scored one against Villa and I just loved him since then.

How else are you involved in football?

I’ve played powerchair football for 10 years now starting at a team in newcastle, but it meant traveling weekly up there for training so me and 3 others set up one in Middlesbrough in 2012. I have played nationally and helped coach the reserves and 3rd team but then separated and set another team up with 5 others from Middlesbrough who all left too and we formed Teesside PFC in 2018, where i am now player/coach. We have been promoted after one season to the Premier League where we will play the best teams in England next season.

Who is your favourite ever Middlesbrough manager?

Aitor Karanka, his style of football is phenomenal and he was a real nice guy off the pitch. He stays in regular contact with me even though he’s no longer at the club.

Who should we watch out for from the current Boro team?

No one were rubbish, jokes. It depends who starts Britts is a goalscorer, so is Fletcher but our wing backs Spence and Coulson are pacy and dangerous.

Where do you think you will finish in the league this season?

I’d be happy with 8th or top 10. We’ve brought no one in yet apart from Grant Hall and released 11/12 players.

What do you know about Shrewsbury?

Few loan players went there i think? Adam Reach and Jayson Leutwiler, saw he did great for you too!

What do you think the score will be?

Depends what Boro turn up, could be 3-0 to us or 1-0 to you lot. But I’ll hope for option A.

Big thanks to Owen, for answering our questions. Owen also runs the Middlesbrough supporters club Facebook page.

HOW WAS THE GAME BIZZY LAD?

We asked the Salopian super fan, Bizzy for his thoughts on our League 1 home game against Oxford United.

“Nappies on, dummy in having his botty talced the works. An adult baby what does he get out of that? Two farleys rusks and his arse wiped.”

“A veritable plethora of emotions on show at the Meddah Saturday, even with 10 men I’m still not quite sure how we lost that game, some utter schoolboy defending a big part of our downfall.”

“Salop sticking with four at the back again and the difference in the style of football and entertainment on show is obvious to see, why has it took Ricketts till late Febuary to implement these changes I don’t know. With even being gutted after defeat it was one of the most exciting games of football I’ve seen all season, very open and after a indecisive start (few of the owd mons swilling the night nurse maybe) Salop grew into the game, the one less man at the back gives Salop a lot more freedom in forward positions, the midfield triplet of Vela, Laurent and Mr Duracell himself were all class in the opening stages and we were creating chances some lovely 1 2 football. It was as if a large weight had been taken off some players backs and finally allowed them to express themselves.”

“The first blow was the injury to Pierre such a massive figure for Town and as shown with the goals we conceded we looked a lot more shaky without him, but Salop looked very comfortable at 2 nil up, two cracking goals you can see the confidence in Lang and Udoh, Lang’s goal especially was utter class, soon as he got the ball you knew it was going in. After watching the replays i still can’t see how he’s given a foul nevermind a second yellow, shocking decision which totally changed the course of the game, an utter dagger in the heart but even with ten men we should have handled things better.”

“Like so many keepers I’ve seen down the Meddah over years, O’Leary’s shot stopping is second to none but his decision making is worrying at times and certainly doesn’t breed confidence for the defenders and with Salop almost mathematically safe would it be worth giving Harry Burgoyne a little run between the sticks seeing as he could be potentially our number 1 next season.”

“The goal just before half time was a killer and Salop in truth were on the backfoot from then, I know we were a man down but substitutions were a tad puzzling for me, the way Oxford were bulling forward Walker was not the answer he’s far to static and could see from the off he was struggling with the pace of the game and Love for Lang although understandble maybe because the way the game was going didnt work either, it made us sit back even further and left the brilliant Udoh a bit isolated. Another poorly defended goal for there winner again a header and it was game over, Oxford are 3rd in the division showing what an average division it is this season but like Rotherham they are physical and very good at frustrating other teams with there antics such as going down at every opportune moment and they played the ref like a fiddle.”

“Positives – the football is a lot more pleasing on the eye, midfield having a lot more freedom to express themselves, look to have a lot more bite upfront, creating more chances, Udoh and Lang looking very hungry.”

“Negatives- defending was schoolboy at times, O’Leary indecisive and the subs didnt really work although kind of understand Sam for making them.”

“Salop gave it there all Saturday and it was refreshing to see supporters enjoying the game not looking like they got up at 6am to watch an algebra programme on Open University.”

“Coventry away on Saturday will undoubtedly be very tough and the absense of Vela and potentially Pierre will be massive blows but on the plus side we’ve still got the superb Connor Mc and Whalley to come back. Who knows we may get something, I do feel a lot better about Salop than I did post Accy Stanley though, things look more positive.”

“As Larry Grayson said to his chauffeur boy Howard Shellard “dunna let the buggers bite ya”

CORBIN’S VIEW FROM THE STANDS

Our young inspirational reporter and massive Shrewsbury Town fan Corbin gives us his thoughts on our home game against Oxford United.

“I started the day being involved in The Shrewsbury Town in the Community “Community Day”. Playing Football with other children at a Shrewsability Session then walking into the ground to have my photo taken with others and the whole team wearing our Shrews 4 All T-Shirts, Omar called me over and I stood with him as we posed for pictures.”

“Back to Block 18 for my seat after some well earned food, just in time for the team walking out as Sam Ricketts kept the same formation of 4-3-3 and the same eleven players as at Bristol Rovers last week a game I missed. Udoh, Lang and Cummings were our front three.”

“We started the game brightly as did Oxford, our visitors winning a corner in first minute which failed to produce and within 5 mins we were bearing down on their goal first Cummings had a shot saved and the rebound fell to Lang who’s shot was blocked then Vela grabbed it but his shot was blocked too. That got the whole crowd going and the noise levels increased with our new look attacking flair which after some recent performances is far more exciting football, none of this hoofball or being too cautious.”

“Cummings again with a half chance which was blocked then just 60 seconds later Udoh got better of his marker and smashed the ball into the floor as he shot at goal with the bounce beating the keeper, the ground erupted 1-0 to the Shrews after 12 mins. The goal seemed to settle us and but for the odd counter attack from Oxford it was almost one way traffic for the next 20 minutes or so with Edwards twice, Vela, Lang and Udoh all having chances either saved, wide or blocked but our forward attack was working and 1-0 soon became 2 as Golbourne who came on for the injured Pierre laid the ball to Lang who bent his shot past the Oxford Keeper following a free kick. We felt like we were in dream land as we were two goals in front for the first time this season and the game was only 30 minutes old, we were dominating a high flying team again.”

“At this point it looked like we would score more than that, it seemed the day we would finally play someone off the pitch and score a few goals in the process but as we all know too well this is little olde Shrewsbury, we have learnt that nothing is ever plain sailing with our team. A dubious decision by the referee Mr Seb Stocksbridge (oh no not him again!) gave a 2nd yellow and a red card to Josh Vela from our view point it looked like just two players colliding, an accident not a yellow card but not in the eyes of yet another poor League 1 referee. We were down to 10 men 2 -0 up with 55 mins plus to play, we seemed to be too good going forward to worry there was more goals in the game but unfortunately none from us.”

“Some split opinions on the decision changing the game but the mentality of the players is going to change as is the shape or formation. Oxford grew in confidence with the extra man but we still went forward searching for more, Lang with a driven shot just over. Five added minutes were given and then disaster their winger wriggled free on our right cut the ball across O’Leary and into the net 2-1 on 48 mins. Half time came and we were 2-1 up and boo’s rang out to the referee for what many thought were his decision making to give fouls and cards against our players but did little to make his popularity rise but not giving Oxford similar but never mind we felt good. Probably the best 45 minute league performance we have seen at home in 2020 with exception of their goal and Vela’s red card.”

“Football is a game of two halves and that was more true in the second half, a half time sub by Sam Ricketts as Cummings came off for Walker, maybe to bolster our midfield but Lang and Udoh both worked in tandem as a front two going forward despite the change we got deeper as Oxford came onto us searching for an equaliser. They dominated us unlike the first half almost like they had turned the tables as shot after shot, corner after corner they had us pinned in nothing would stick for us as we cleared and the ball just kept on coming back. Just 10 minutes into the second period Ricketts made his last change as Lang went off for Donald Love, you could see we were now a back five with three midfielders and Udoh as the lone front man. Oxford made a sub in response and just two minutes after being on he wriggled free on edge of the box out wide dropped his shoulder and whipped the ball in to the opposite top corner. Oxford were level 2-2 with still 30 minutes to play, the referee who was having a quiet second half started giving niggle fouls to Oxford some for very little as we got deeper and deeper.”

“Hoofball had returned to our team as we cleared Oxford kept coming now looking for a winner. Our only real chance of the second half fell to Udoh who burst through one on one with the keeper who kept it out. As the game edged towards the end Oxford grabbed their chance a nothing free kick was played into the box and the man at the far post put it back across goal past the desperate dive of O’Leary. They had done it 2-0 down to 3-2 up in the 88th minute, though we had 10 men the scenes at the away end were similar of two weeks ago when a Tranmere goal very late on caused fans to run onto the pitch. 4 mins of time added on at the end made no difference to us if anything Oxford could have added a 4th goal.”

“So we left another league home game empty handed, today we had it in our hands 2-0 up after 30 minutes and cruising, some fans argue that the red card changed the game but can the referee take the blame for our defeat? Probably not just him but you have to ask did Sam Ricketts hit the panic button at 2-1 ?! A game of two halves it was but my thoughts on the game were we just didn’t do things right at 2-0, the defending at times was average Oxfords first and second goals and even their winner could be down to us as a team, individuals and tactics. We know we have enough to stay up points wise in this highly strange season but todays game was lost on many things.”

“My Man Of The Match Today was Dan Udoh, scored a cracking goal for opener, his hold up play and link up play was brilliant with Lang and Cummings, he scared Oxfords two centre backs’s most of first half and did a decent job as the lone striker in second half. He was unlucky not to score a second and Salop’s third in the second half.”

“As fans we dust ourselves down and go again just the small matter of going to a team top of the table and unbeaten in 14 games, playing their home games at a ground that belongs to someone else. Coventry City at St Andrews, Birmingham City’s ground I will be there as usual, my first ever visit.”

“Love & Peace, Corbin”

Thanks to Corbin for his thoughts on the game against Oxford.

MATCH PREVIEW

Sam Northwood previews today’s home League 1 game against Oxford United.

Town host Oxford hoping to carry on and get another win after the victory on Saturday at Bristol Rovers.

Earlier this season Town drew 0-0 with Oxford at the Kassam Stadium. It was a decent performance on the day where Shrewsbury could have won the game.

Oxford currently sit 7th, one place and one point outside the play off spots. They are also only five points off the automatic promotion spaces. They are in fine form as well, they have won their last four, scoring eleven and only conceding once.

After a good performance last Saturday it looks like Ricketts has found a new formation that suits the players. Dave Edwards and Callum Lang have impressed recently and will hope to carry that on.

My Predicted XI’s

Shrewsbury Town:

O’Leary

Williams

Ebanks Landell

Pierre

Beckles

Vela

Edwards

Laurent

Lang

Udoh

Cummings

Oxford United:

Eastwood

Forde
